Data Recovery NJ Cost in 2026: What You'll Pay and What Changes the Number
Quotes for data recovery in New Jersey run from $199 at a local bench to $3,500 at a national lab, and the websites don't explain why. Here's what the price actually depends on, what I charge in Somerville, and how to read a competing quote so you're not paying lab money for a shop-bench job.
The short answer
In New Jersey in 2026, data recovery costs fall into three bands, and which band you're in depends on how the drive failed, not on what's on it or who's quoting.
- $199 to $599: the drive is physically fine or still readable, and the problem is deleted files, a format, corruption, a dead enclosure, or bad sectors. This is most of what walks into my shop, and it's done in-house. Where you land inside that range depends mostly on capacity: a 256GB drive sits near the bottom, a 1TB drive higher, and 2TB and up can go past it, because every drive is imaged in full before recovery and that takes time in proportion to its size.
- $600 to about $1,500: electronic or firmware failure, degraded platters, multi-drive RAID rebuilds. Some of this is bench work, some of it belongs in a lab.
- $1,000 to $3,500 and up: the drive clicks, beeps, or won't spin. That's a head swap or motor transplant in a clean room with donor parts. No shop bench does this, including mine, and I refer those cases out with the diagnostic refunded.
What moves a data recovery quote in NJ
Four things. A good shop can tell you where you land after a diagnostic, not before.
The kind of failure
Logical (the drive is healthy, the files aren't), degraded (the drive is sick but talking), or mechanical (the drive needs surgery). This is 80% of the price. Everything else is a modifier.
Drive capacity
Bigger drives cost more to recover, and it's a time cost, not a per-gigabyte fee. Every recovery starts by imaging the whole drive, sector by sector, so a 1TB drive takes roughly four times as long on the imager as a 256GB drive before a single file comes off it. A healthy 256GB SSD can be imaged in under an hour. A healthy 1TB hard drive is a few hours. A 4TB drive is most of a day, and if it's failing and the imager has to slow down and work around bad areas, that same 4TB drive can occupy the bench for days. The extraction and verification afterward scale the same way: more data, more time to copy it off and spot-check it. That's why a 1TB recovery lands higher in the range than a 256GB recovery with the same kind of failure, and why 2TB and larger can run past $599.
The device type
An SSD with a failed controller behaves nothing like a spinning disk. A RAID or NAS means imaging every disk before the array can be rebuilt, so multi-drive jobs start around $599 and scale with drive count.
Who's quoting and where the drive goes
A store that forwards your drive to a lab adds markup and two shipments to the lab's price. A national lab with a "free evaluation" builds the evaluation into a quote that starts in the high hundreds. A local bench quotes the job it will actually do.

| Item | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostic | $75 | Standard 2 to 3 days. Refunded if the data can't be recovered and you handed the drive over directly. If the drive has to come out of a computer, the labor is real and the fee stays. |
| Deleted, formatted or corrupted files (drive healthy) | $199 to $399 | Low end of the range. Drive is imaged first, files recovered from the image. |
| Degraded drive: bad sectors, slow reads, won't open | $399 to $599 | Hardware imager works around the damage. 2TB and larger can run higher. |
| Capacity adjustment | Scales with drive size | Imaging time grows with capacity. 256GB sits at the low end of each range, 1TB toward the middle, 2TB and up toward the top or above. Quoted as one flat number after the diagnostic. |
| Failed external enclosure, drive inside is fine | Low end of range | One of the most common "dead drive" walk-ins. The drive isn't dead. |
| SSD and NVMe (logical) | $199 to $599 | A controller failure or TRIM-erased deletion can be unrecoverable; I'll say so at the diagnostic, not after a bill. |
| RAID and NAS | From $599 | Every disk imaged before reassembly. Scales with drive count and complexity. |
| USB flash drives and SD cards (logical) | Lower half of range | Cards with a failed controller are lab work. |
| Rush | +$100 | When the bench allows it. Discussed at drop-off. |
| Mechanical failure: clicking, beeping, won't spin | Referred out | Clean-room work. You get a straight referral and the $75 back. |

How to read a competing NJ data recovery quote
I looked at how the companies ranking for "data recovery NJ" describe their pricing. The patterns repeat, and once you see them you can translate any quote.
- "Free evaluation" plus "starts at $650." That's a lab. The evaluation is free because the drive has to ship to them first, and the floor price covers the shipping, the case manager and the overhead. For a logical recovery that a local bench does for $199 to $399, you're paying about three times the price for the same result.
- "No data, no charge," with a diagnostic fee that's non-refundable and parts that "still apply." Read that twice. The guarantee covers the recovery fee only. Ask what you'd owe on a partial recovery and whether you approve a firm number before work starts.
- Price tiers labeled minor, moderate, severe, extreme. These are honest in shape (they're tracking the same three failure types I described above), but the lowest tier usually starts at $300 and the words are assigned after the drive is in their lab. Make sure you can decline at that point without a return-shipping surprise.
- Rush tiers at +$250, +$500, +$1,000. Those surcharges typically move the start of the assessment forward, not the finish of the recovery. If timing matters, ask for the date your files come back, not the date someone looks at the drive.
- Per-gigabyte pricing. I don't price this way and I'd push back on the model. The work is imaging the drive and rebuilding its structures; that effort is set by the failure, not the folder size. Per-GB pricing mostly guarantees the quote grows after your files are already in someone else's possession.
- "Local" with a toll-free number and a FedEx link. Your drive is leaving New Jersey. That's fine for a clicking drive and a waste of money and time for everything else.
How the $75 turns into a firm price
Drop-off only in Somerville. No shipping, no appointment.
Call first if you want a range
Describe what happened and I'll tell you on the phone which band you're probably in. If the numbers don't work for your situation, I'd rather say so now than take $75 for an answer you didn't need.
Drop the drive off
Bring the drive or the whole computer, plus a list of the folders that matter most. Check-in is a few minutes on the kiosk.
Diagnostic, 2 to 3 days
The drive is imaged and the failure type is identified. You get a call with what I found and one flat price.
Approve, recover, pick up
Nothing starts until you say yes. Recovered files go onto a new drive, I spot-check that they open, and you pick up in Somerville.

Data recovery pricing in NJ: common questions
How much does data recovery cost in NJ?
At Dave's Computers in Somerville, the diagnostic is $75 and most recoveries done in-house run $199 to $599 flat, with very large drives sometimes higher. Labs that handle mechanically failed drives typically quote from the mid hundreds into the low thousands. The failure type sets the price more than the device does.
Is the $75 data recovery diagnostic refundable?
Yes, when the data can't be recovered and the drive was handed over directly. If the drive had to be removed from a computer first, the labor was real and the $75 stays. If you decline the quote, the diagnostic is the only thing you've spent.
Why do New Jersey data recovery quotes vary so much?
Three different jobs are sold under one name. Software-level recovery on a healthy drive is the least work. Imaging a degraded drive takes hours of machine time. Mechanical recovery means a clean room and donor parts. Many quotes also hide the cost of a free evaluation inside the recovery price, or add shipping and markup when a store forwards your drive to a lab.
Does a bigger drive cost more to recover?
Yes. A 1TB drive costs more than a 256GB drive with the same failure because the whole drive has to be imaged before recovery starts, and imaging time grows with capacity. It's roughly four times the imaging time, plus longer extraction and verification. That's a time cost quoted as one flat number, not a per-gigabyte rate.
Does Dave's charge per gigabyte for data recovery?
No. Per-GB pricing lets the bill grow after your drive is already in someone's lab. The work is set by the failure, not the folder size, so you get one flat quote based on the diagnostic, before any work starts.
How long does data recovery take in NJ?
The diagnostic is 2 to 3 days. Straightforward logical recoveries often finish within a few days after approval. A badly degraded drive that has to be imaged slowly can take a week or more. Rush may be available for an additional $100 and is discussed at drop-off.
