The iMac has a timeless design that seems fresh even a decade after being released. As long as the hardware is capable of handling your requirements, there is no reason why an iMac won’t still be offering faithful service many years after being purchased. To help with that, our iMac refurbishment service includes full diagnostics, parts replacement or upgrade, software or macOS patching or upgrade, drive upgrades or direct replacement and everything necessary to make your iMac like new again.
iMac screen replacement
The screen is definitely the star of the show with the later generation iMacs. They are also susceptible to damage. Most often water or impact damage. Any slight imperfection in a Retina screen is going to be noticeable. Which is why our iMac screen replacement service is so popular. We can replace your iMac screen just like we can MacBook Pro or other Apple Product.
We use approved Retina screens and trained Apple technicians for all our Apple repairs.
iMac virus and malware removal
Apple products are much less susceptible to malware and viruses than Windows but they can still be infected. There is malware out there designed specifically to target macOS so you have to take precautions. If you think you have been targeted by malware or a virus, Dave’s Computers in New Jersey can help.
iMac servicing works a lot like our refurbishment service. We inspect your iMac for wear or damage, run full system diagnostics, clean the fans and interior where necessary, perform any parts replacement or upgrades depending on your wishes, software and app updates and do everything we can to ensure your iMac is working at its maximum potential.
Fixing sound issues on an iMac
The iMac uses internal speakers to generate audio. Like other Apple computers, these speakers are susceptible to being blown or to damage. If your iMac’s sound isn’t what it used to be, changing the speakers for newer versions could fix the issue. It’s detailed work but our Apple technicians are up to the task. We have performed dozens of iMac speaker replacements and can do the same for you!
Fixing boot problems on an iMac
Black or blue screen on boot? iMac won’t load into the desktop? We can help. Dave’s Computers has vast experience in handling boot issues with Apple computers. While iMacs are complicated, the causes of boot problems are usually one of only a few things. Some are simple to fix like Incompatible Boot Items while others are slightly more complicated. Either way, we can handle it. We’ll get your iMac working in no time!
iMac hard drive replacement
Earlier iMacs used HDD with moving parts and spinning platters. Newer iMac use SSD, Solid State Drives. Much faster, no moving parts and are cooler and quieter too. Whether your hard drive has stopped working or you need more space, we can upgrade or replace your hard drive in no time. We use approved, fully compatible drives and can perform all the tasks necessary to have your iMac working again.
iMac RAM or processor replacement
Newer Intel versions of iMac can have their processors or RAM replaced if they go faulty. If your iMac isn’t booting, won’t start, continually crashes or won’t stay running, that could be the cause. We run full diagnostics beforehand but if your memory or processor needs replacement, our trained Apple specialists can help. It doesn’t cost as much as you might think!
Data recovery for iMac
Any device that uses storage is susceptible to data loss. The iMac is no exception. Fortunately, you have a couple of options, Time Machine from Apple and our data recovery experts. Dave’s Computers in New Jersey has a full suite of data recovery tools to recover as much data as possible. Anything not backed up by Apple, we can try to recover. It takes time and nothing is guaranteed but our success rate is very high!
Preparing your iMac for sale
If you’re planning to sell or give your iMac away, you need to remove all personal information from it first. Any data left on your iMac could be used against you to compromise you, steal your identity or cause mischief. Preparing an iMac for sale or disposal means securely wiping all data from your computer and overwriting the hard drive with secure programs. Then double checking there are no traces of you or your life left for others to see. It’s all part of the service!
Troubleshooting your iMac
iMacs are very reliable computers but things can still go wrong. Dave’s Computers can fix the vast majority of issues you might come up against but you may also be able to fix some basic issues yourself.
Three common faults an iMac may face include:
- Black screen on booting your iMac.
- Lost or deleted files.
- Question mark on an iMac folder.
You may be able to address each of these common issues from the comfort of your home. Here’s how:
Black screen on booting your iMac
If you see a black screen instead of your iMac desktop, there are a couple of things you can try at home.
- Power on your iMac and press the power button once when the black screen shows.
- Press ‘S’ on your keyboard and hold down the Power button until your iMac shuts down.
- Wait around 20 seconds.
- Press Power again and wait for your iMac to boot.
This is a well-known trick for ‘encouraging’ the iMac to boot properly. In many cases, this is enough to boot macOS properly and have you in your desktop as usual.
Lost or deleted files
Accidentally deleting files or misplacing them isn’t unique to iMac or Apple. It’s a problem our data recovery guys face every day. There are a couple of things you can try at home before bringing your iMac to our New Jersey computer store.
- Press Command and Space on your iMac keyboard to bring up Spotlight.
- Search for the file you have lost within Spotlight.
If you use Time Machine, Spotlight will also search there. It will also search any external storage too. You can search for partial filenames as well as full ones so is worth trying.
Question mark on an iMac folder
Seeing a question mark over a folder when you first boot your iMac means macOS cannot find the boot disk. This may sound terminal but there is an easy potential fix.
- Boot your iMac while holding down the power button, Command and R keys.
- Let go the power button while holding Command and R keys until you see the Apple logo.
- Manually select your main hard drive from the Startup Disk screen.
If that doesn’t work, repeat the above and select the First Aid tab that appears when you select the boot disk in Step 3. Select First Aid and select Run. Allow the disk to repair itself and reboot your iMac as normal.
If any of those fixes don’t work, bring your iMac to Dave’s Computers in New Jersey and we’ll take care of it for you.
Recent iMac repairs by Dave’s Computers
Our Apple team handle iMac repairs on a daily basis. They can include everything from broken screens to non-booting computers. Here are three ways we have helped our Hillsborough, New Jersey neighbors with their iMacs.
Broken iMac screen
Allan is a freelancer and lives on his iMac. Somehow the Retina screen on his 27” iMac became cracked. Despite trying to work with it, the crack distracted him from his work. He brought his iMac to Dave’s Computers and we took care of it. We removed the cracked screen, cleaned up the insides of the computer, replaced the screen with an approved Retina screen and put everything back together again.
It cost much less than Apple would have charged, was done within a couple of hours and Alan could get back to work.
iMac wouldn’t power on
Imelda’s iMac wouldn’t turn on at all. She brought her computer to us at Dave’s and we diagnosed the issue as a blown fuse in the cable. One of the easier problems to handle. We replaced the power cord with an Apple-approved version and the iMac powered on again properly. Less than 10 minutes and $20 later and Imelda’s iMac works perfectly once more!
iMac wouldn’t boot into the desktop
This is a common issue with all Apple computers. As macOS depends on loading the right file at the right time, anything that interrupts that can cause issues. Fortunately, Apple also provides the tools necessary to troubleshoot. Brent’s iMac suffered this very thing.
Our Apple technicians run full diagnostics on the iMac, checked the remaining life of the drive, checked macOS and checked file integrity. In the end, we found it was a third-party app that had been installed and was interrupting normal boot. Once we removed the app, Brent’s iMac worked. Another happy customer!
