When airflow matters — and in a powerful build, it always does — the case you choose makes a real difference. Here's why the Fractal Design Torrent Black RGB keeps showing up in our recommended builds at Dave's Computers.
I've been building and repairing computers in Somerville since 2011, and one of the most common questions I get from customers putting together a new rig is: does the case really matter?
The short answer is yes — especially when you're running a modern GPU that throws off serious heat. A case that doesn't breathe well will throttle your components, run louder, and shorten the life of the system. The case is the foundation of your thermal setup, and the Fractal Design Torrent Black RGB is one of the best-engineered cases I've come across for exactly that reason.
It won Tom's Hardware's Innovation Award in 2022 and the European Hardware Awards for Best ATX Case the same year. Those aren't flukes — this case earned them. Here's why.
Most cases treat airflow as an afterthought. The Torrent was designed around it from the ground up. The front panel is an open mesh grille with no obstruction — air moves straight in without fighting through a solid plastic facade. Combine that with a streamlined open interior layout and you have a case that just breathes.
The real magic is in the fans it ships with. The front intake uses two 180mm × 38mm Prisma RGB PWM fans. That 38mm thickness is significant — thicker fans can push dramatically more air than a standard 25mm fan at the same noise level. These aren't just big, they're deep, and that combination means massive air volume moved quietly.
The bottom panel adds three 140mm Prisma RGB PWM fans as additional intake. That's five fans total, all working together to flood the interior with cool air and push heat out the rear and top. Your CPU and GPU are both getting dedicated fresh air, not recycled warm air that's already passed over other components.
Modern graphics cards are the hardest component to keep cool in a high-performance build. Cards like the RTX 5060 Ti or RX 9060 XT generate a lot of heat, and they need fresh air — not air that's already been warmed by the CPU.
The Torrent solves this with expansive base intakes and extra-large bottom fan support positioned directly below the GPU. The open interior layout gives the GPU room to breathe, and the intake fans push air right into the card's cooler. The result, as Fractal Design puts it, is "next level GPU cooling" — and the benchmarks from independent reviewers back that up.
OC3D found CPU temperatures held steady at 60°C all-core while gaming, with the GPU sitting at 71°C — strong numbers for a well-loaded system. HEXUS described it as keeping things "cool and quiet under load."
If a customer ever wants to step up to a custom water loop or an all-in-one liquid cooler down the road, the Torrent is fully ready. The front and bottom panels both support radiators up to 420mm, including thick 360×180mm configurations, and can handle push-pull fan setups. There's even built-in support for a water-cooling reservoir on the motherboard tray. You don't have to commit to water cooling now — but the option stays open.
Beyond the airflow story, the Torrent is a genuinely quality case to build in. The tempered glass side panel latches at the top without bolts, so swapping it out is tool-free and easy. The PSU shroud is integrated and clean, hiding cables below the motherboard tray, and cable routing has 32mm of clearance behind the tray with guides and straps already installed.
Storage is handled with two steel drive trays with vibration-damping rubber grommets for hard drives, plus four dedicated SSD brackets. There's a pre-installed Nexus 9P Slim PWM fan hub to manage all those included fans cleanly. Seven bridgeless expansion slots give plenty of room for high-end multi-slot GPU configurations.
The I/O panel on top includes a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C port running at 20Gbps — fast enough to handle modern external SSDs without a bottleneck. It's the kind of detail that tells you the engineers thought about the whole experience, not just the thermal specs.
Six things that separate this case from the competition at its price point.
Two 180×38mm front fans move serious air volume at low RPM — quiet power that most cases can't match.
Bottom intakes and an open layout push fresh air directly to your graphics card — exactly where modern builds need it most.
Supports up to 420mm radiators front and bottom with push-pull room. Built-in reservoir support on the motherboard tray.
Independent reviewers consistently report excellent thermals without uncomfortable fan noise — the hallmark of good thermal engineering.
Tool-free tempered glass, a built-in fan hub, cable straps, and 32mm routing space make the build process genuinely enjoyable.
Tom's Hardware Innovation Award and European Hardware Awards Best ATX Case — both in 2022. The recognition is well-earned.

If you're putting together a serious gaming rig or a high-performance workstation and you care about keeping it cool without turning your desk into a jet engine, yes — the Fractal Design Torrent belongs on your short list.
It's particularly well-suited for:
The optional front and bottom nylon dust filters are a nice touch too — if you want to reduce dust intake at the cost of a small amount of airflow, you can. If you'd rather prioritize maximum airflow, pull them off. The choice is yours.
At Dave's Computers, we do custom PC builds in New Jersey for customers across Somerset, Hunterdon, and Middlesex counties. If you're considering a new build and want guidance on case selection, component compatibility, or just want someone local to put it together properly — give us a call or drop by the shop.
Yes — it's one of the best cases available for traditional air cooling. The two front 180mm fans and three bottom 140mm fans create strong positive pressure inside the case, which keeps both CPU and GPU temperatures low with air cooling alone. You don't need a water loop to get excellent performance from this case.
Yes. Both the front and bottom panels support radiators up to 420mm, including 360×180mm configurations, with room for push-pull fan setups. The case also has integrated support for a water-cooling reservoir on the motherboard tray if you're running a custom loop.
Yes. The Torrent supports E-ATX, ATX, mATX, ITX, SSI-EEB, and SSI-CEB motherboard form factors. It's a full-size tower with real room inside, so large boards fit comfortably.
Up to 461mm total GPU length, or 423mm with the front fans mounted. Most consumer GPUs — including high-end triple-fan cards — are well within that range. We'd still recommend confirming your specific card's length before purchasing any case.
Absolutely. We build custom PCs for customers across central New Jersey — just bring us your component list or tell us what you're looking to do and we'll put together a recommendation. Drop off at our Somerville shop, no appointment needed.
The RGB version (Prisma fans) adds addressable RGB lighting on all five included fans, with the PSU shroud also featuring integrated ARGB effects on the tempered glass models. If aesthetics matter to you and you want a visually impressive system, the RGB version is worth it. If you just want the best thermals and don't care about lighting, the standard version performs identically.
