Signs Your PC Needs New Thermal Paste
Thermal paste is the thin layer that carries heat from your CPU into the cooler. Fresh, it works beautifully. Three to five years in, sooner in hot-running gaming rigs, it dries, cracks, and stops doing its job. I’m Dave, and here’s what dried paste looks like from the owner’s chair:
The Slow Creep
The machine ran cool and quiet for years, and somewhere along the way the fans got louder and the performance got worse. Nothing broke: the paste just quietly gave up.
Hot Under Load
Temperatures spiking into the 90s°C during games or heavy work, with the CPU throttling itself to survive. Compact gaming rigs are especially prone; the HP Omen line is a regular on my bench for this.
Shutdowns in the Heat
The machine turns itself off mid-game or mid-render to protect the chip. If ignoring it sounds tempting, remember: sustained heat shortens the life of everything in the case.
What a Proper Repaste Involves
The reason DIY repastes disappoint is that the paste is only half the job:
- Complete cleanup: every trace of the old compound removed before anything new goes on. Cutting this corner is how temperatures end up worse than before.
- Premium compound, correct application: quality paste, applied the way the compound and the cooler are designed for, not the DIY glob or the too-thin smear.
- Mounting pressure verified: how the cooler goes back on decides whether that paste layer works at all. This is the step DIY jobs get wrong and my thermal numbers don’t.
- Dust-out and airflow check included: the case gets cleaned while it’s open, because a repaste feeding a clogged heatsink is half a fix.
- Proof, not promises: the machine is load tested again after the repaste to confirm the temperatures came down. Repastes on my bench regularly drop load temps dramatically on machines that were cooking.

Thermal Paste Replacement FAQ
How often should thermal paste be replaced?
For most machines, somewhere in the three-to-five-year range: sooner for hot-running gaming rigs and compact prebuilts. If your temperatures have crept up over time, the age of the paste is a prime suspect regardless of the calendar.
Will new thermal paste make my computer faster?
If heat is currently forcing your CPU to throttle, yes. The chip gets to run at full speed again, and the fans usually quiet down too. If your temperatures are already healthy, we will tell you a repaste is not what you need.
Do laptops need thermal paste replacement too?
Very much so: laptops run hotter and their paste ages faster. A laptop repaste with a thorough fan and vent cleaning is one of the best things you can do for an aging machine that runs hot and loud.
Can I just add more paste on top of the old paste?
Please do not. Adding compound over what is already there traps heat and often makes temperatures worse, and a proper repaste is a bench job finished with a load test.
How much does a thermal paste replacement cost?
