That’s the question that decides whether a CPU upgrade is a bargain or a rebuild — and it’s the first thing I check on every machine. I’m Dave, and after fifteen years upgrading PCs in Somerville, here is the honest lay of the land:
Many AM4 motherboards from the Ryzen 3600/3700X era accept a modern X3D gaming CPU after a BIOS update — same board, same RAM, dramatically faster gaming. Pound for pound, it is the best-value CPU upgrade in the business right now, and it is one of my favorite jobs to hand back.
Some Intel sockets only span a generation or two, so the “best CPU my board supports” is often a small step for real money. When that is your situation, I will say so — and usually point the budget at storage, RAM, or graphics instead, where the same dollars buy more speed.

When your board supports a genuinely faster chip — like the AM4 X3D path — it can be the best value in PC upgrades. When the ceiling is low, it usually is not, and we will tell you which case yours is during the free assessment, before anything is ordered.
Often, but big-brand desktops add wrinkles: locked BIOS options, undersized coolers, and power limits. We check the specific model rather than guessing from a spec sheet, so you know what is actually possible before spending.
Only if the new chip uses a different socket or your board cannot support it with a BIOS update. Checking that compatibility is step one of every CPU job we do.
Staying on the same platform usually keeps your RAM. Cooling is case-by-case: faster chips make more heat, and we verify your cooler can handle the new CPU as part of the plan — with an honest price for both if it cannot.
Typically a day or two once parts are in hand — most of that is BIOS work, careful installation, and the stress testing we refuse to skip.
