First Question: Is Your Laptop’s RAM Soldered?
This one detail decides everything, and you usually can’t tell from the outside. I’m Dave, and checking it is the first thing I do on every memory job, free, before anything is ordered. Laptops come three ways:
Two Open Slots
The best case: standard SO-DIMM slots, both accessible. We can take you from 8GB to 16GB or 32GB with a matched pair running in dual channel. The configuration that actually delivers the speed on the box.
Half Soldered, One Slot
Very common in HP, Dell, and Lenovo consumer models: some memory on the board, one open slot. Still upgradeable, but the module has to match what’s soldered, or you leave performance on the table. This is where DIY buys go wrong.
Fully Soldered
Thin-and-light designs often solder everything. If that’s your machine, I’ll tell you straight, and usually point the same budget at an SSD upgrade, which soldered-RAM laptops almost always still allow and always feel.
How Much RAM Does a Laptop Actually Need?
Honest guidance, not upsell: 8GB is the floor where modern Windows starts swapping to disk the moment you multitask. It’s why so many 8GB laptops feel slow while showing nothing wrong. 16GB is the sweet spot for browsing, Office, video calls, and photo work, and it’s the upgrade most of my customers feel immediately. 32GB earns its keep for video editing, heavy spreadsheets, virtual machines, and serious gaming. Past that, most people are paying for headroom they’ll never touch, and I’ll say so.

Every brand has its quirks. Here’s what we see most on the bench:
HP Laptop RAM Upgrades
Pavilion, Envy, Victus, and older ProBooks are frequent flyers for memory upgrades. Many ship with a single stick, so adding a matched module both doubles capacity and unlocks dual channel in one visit. Dell Laptop RAM Upgrades
Inspiron and Latitude lines are usually upgrade-friendly with accessible slots; XPS models increasingly solder memory to stay thin. Lenovo Laptop RAM Upgrades

Why DIY Laptop Memory Upgrades Go Sideways
RAM looks like the easiest upgrade there is, and it is, right up until it isn’t:
- Wrong generation or speed: DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable, and a mismatched speed pairs down to the slowest stick, or refuses to boot at all.
- The single-channel trap: one big stick instead of a matched pair can cost real performance, especially on laptops whose graphics share system memory.
- Cracked covers and broken clips: modern bottom panels hide screws under feet and grip with plastic clips that snap when pried wrong. I see the aftermath weekly.
- Counterfeit and gray-market modules: marketplace “deals” that fail memtest on day one. We install name-brand memory matched to your machine’s spec and test it before you pick up.
One honest note: not every slow laptop needs memory. Part of the diagnostic is measuring how much of your memory is in use while you work, and if the slowdown lives elsewhere, a spinning hard drive being suspect number one, I'll tell you that instead of selling you RAM.

Is 8GB of RAM still enough?

How do I know if my laptop’s RAM is soldered?
You usually can’t without opening it or decoding the maker’s spec sheets: model numbers one digit apart can differ. Bring it in; the check is free and takes minutes.
How long does a laptop memory upgrade take?
Once the right modules are in hand, most are same-day: install, full memory test, done. Machines that bury their slots under a full teardown can take a bit longer. We’ll tell you up front.
