This one detail decides everything, and you usually can’t tell from the outside. I’m Dave, and checking it is the first thing I do on every memory job — free, before anything is ordered. Laptops come three ways:
The best case: standard SO-DIMM slots, both accessible. We can take you from 8GB to 16GB or 32GB with a matched pair running in dual channel — the configuration that actually delivers the speed on the box.
Very common in HP, Dell, and Lenovo consumer models: some memory on the board, one open slot. Still upgradeable — but the module has to match what’s soldered, or you leave performance on the table. This is where DIY buys go wrong.
Thin-and-light designs often solder everything. If that’s your machine, I’ll tell you straight — and usually point the same budget at an SSD upgrade, which soldered-RAM laptops almost always still allow and always feel.
Honest guidance, not upsell: 8GB is the floor where modern Windows starts swapping to disk the moment you multitask — it’s why so many 8GB laptops feel slow while showing nothing wrong. 16GB is the sweet spot for browsing, Office, video calls, and photo work, and it’s the upgrade most of my customers feel immediately. 32GB earns its keep for video editing, heavy spreadsheets, virtual machines, and serious gaming. Past that, most people are paying for headroom they’ll never touch — and I’ll say so.

Pavilion, Envy, Victus, and older ProBooks are frequent flyers for memory upgrades — many ship with a single stick, so adding a matched module both doubles capacity and unlocks dual channel in one visit.
