I'm Dave. I've been diagnosing and fixing computers in Somerville, NJ since 2011. If your PC is freezing every few seconds, work through these 9 steps in order — each one is a clue. If you get to the end and it's still happening, bring it in.
Work through these in order. Each step is a real diagnostic clue. Most freezing PCs fall into one of these categories — and once you know which one, you'll know whether it's a free fix or time to bring it in.
A PC that's been running for days can freeze from memory leaks or stuck background processes. Shut it completely down, wait 30 seconds, then power it back on. Does it still freeze on a fresh boot?
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, click "Performance," and watch CPU, RAM, and Disk during a freeze. This is your first real diagnostic window — the numbers tell the story.
Download HWMonitor or Core Temp (both free) and watch your CPU temperature during normal use. Normal idle is 35–50°C. Hitting 90°C+ or seeing thermal throttling warnings means your cooling system is failing — usually dust buildup, a dying fan, or dried thermal paste.
Bad RAM causes exactly this kind of random, unpredictable freezing. Type Windows Memory Diagnostic in the Start menu, run it, and let your PC restart. It'll report errors on boot. If you have two sticks, test one at a time to isolate which one failed.
This is the number one cause of freezing in older machines. Download CrystalDiskInfo (free). Look at the health status at the top. "Good" is fine. "Caution" or "Bad" means your drive is failing — and your data is at risk right now.
Some malware runs hidden background processes that eat CPU and cause constant freezing. The free version of Malwarebytes is solid. Run a full scan — it takes 20–40 minutes but it's worth it.
Go to Settings → Windows Update and let any pending updates finish. Windows updates can spike your disk for hours — especially on older machines with spinning hard drives. If your PC is mid-update, let it complete before assuming it's broken.
A dying PSU delivers inconsistent voltage. If your PC freezes specifically during gaming, video editing, or other heavy tasks — and runs fine at idle — the power supply is a strong suspect. Try a different outlet and power strip first. If that changes nothing, the PSU may need testing or replacement.
Press Windows + R, type eventvwr, hit Enter. Go to Windows Logs → System. Look for red "Error" entries that match the time your PC froze. Screenshot them — these codes are exactly what a tech needs to narrow things down fast.
From Bridgewater to Princeton, customers across central New Jersey trust us to fix what other shops couldn't diagnose.
"My PC was freezing every 30 seconds and I thought I needed a new computer. Dave's ran a diagnostic, found a failing hard drive, recovered all my files, and installed a new SSD. It runs faster than when I bought it."
"Brought in my daughter's laptop that kept freezing mid-class. Turned out to be overheating from dust and old thermal paste. Fixed same day, runs perfectly. Straight answers, fair price."
"They told me exactly what was wrong — bad RAM stick — and had it fixed in a day. Other places quoted me $300+ for a 'full tune-up.' Dave's charged $75 for the diagnostic (credited to repair) and the repair itself was totally reasonable."
I've seen a lot of people spend a week trying to fix something that would have taken us 20 minutes to identify. Here's what usually happens on each path.

After 15 years of bench work in Somerville, here's what's actually behind most freezing PCs that come through our door.
Spinning hard drives fail progressively — they freeze before they die completely. CrystalDiskInfo showing "Caution" is your window to recover data and replace the drive before total failure. We see this multiple times a week from Somerset and Middlesex County customers.
Laptops 3–6 years old that haven't been cleaned internally will throttle under load — the CPU drops to near-zero speed to prevent damage, which looks like freezing. A cleaning and thermal paste reapplication fixes this permanently.
A surprising number of "hardware" problems we see are actually malware. Cryptominers and adware run background processes that max out CPU and RAM. Customers often spend money on hardware before ruling this out.
PSU failure is especially common in gaming PCs 4–7 years old. The capacitors degrade and can no longer maintain stable voltage under GPU load. The system freezes or crashes mid-game — but runs fine at idle, which makes it easy to misattribute to the GPU.

Our diagnostic fee is $75, credited toward your repair if you move forward. We run a full bench diagnostic — not a guess. If the repair isn't worth it, we'll tell you straight and you'll still know exactly what failed.
Almost always yes — unless the drive has already failed badly. Most freezing causes (overheating, bad RAM, malware, Windows issues) don't affect your data at all. Even with a failing drive, we attempt data recovery before anything else. We'll always tell you the risk up front.
That pattern almost always points to a power supply or GPU issue. A dying PSU can't deliver stable voltage under load, so the system freezes or hard-crashes. Overheating is the other common cause — the GPU or CPU throttles when cooling fails under load. Both are diagnosable with our $75 bench diagnostic.
Yes. Data recovery in NJ starts at $199 at our Somerville shop. If CrystalDiskInfo shows Caution or Bad, or you hear clicking or grinding, stop using it immediately and bring it in — every additional boot on a failing drive risks permanent data loss.

We'd need to run the $75 diagnostic first. A PC that won't power on after repeated freezing can be anything from a dead power supply to a failed motherboard. Once we know what we're dealing with, we'll give you a straight quote with no obligation to proceed. The $75 is credited if you move forward.
