Step-by-Step: Diagnose Your Freezing PC in NJ

Work through these in order. Each step is a real diagnostic clue. Most freezing PCs fall into one of these categories — and once you know which one, you'll know whether it's a free fix or time to bring it in.

💡 Before you start: Don't just restart and hope it goes away. Freezing that comes back is telling you something. Let's find out what.
1

Do a full shutdown — not sleep, not restart

A PC that's been running for days can freeze from memory leaks or stuck background processes. Shut it completely down, wait 30 seconds, then power it back on. Does it still freeze on a fresh boot?

✓ If yes: it's not a sleep or memory leak issue. Keep going — something real is wrong.
2

Open Task Manager and watch the Performance tab

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, click "Performance," and watch CPU, RAM, and Disk during a freeze. This is your first real diagnostic window — the numbers tell the story.

✓ Disk pegged at 100% consistently = likely a failing hard drive. Skip to step 5.
3

Check for overheating with HWMonitor or Core Temp

Download HWMonitor or Core Temp (both free) and watch your CPU temperature during normal use. Normal idle is 35–50°C. Hitting 90°C+ or seeing thermal throttling warnings means your cooling system is failing — usually dust buildup, a dying fan, or dried thermal paste.

✓ Blowing out the vents is free. If temps stay high after that, the thermal paste needs replacing — that's us.
4

Run Windows Memory Diagnostic

Bad RAM causes exactly this kind of random, unpredictable freezing. Type Windows Memory Diagnostic in the Start menu, run it, and let your PC restart. It'll report errors on boot. If you have two sticks, test one at a time to isolate which one failed.

✓ Errors found = a RAM stick is failing. A replacement stick is usually $20–$40.
5

Check your drive health with CrystalDiskInfo

This is the number one cause of freezing in older machines. Download CrystalDiskInfo (free). Look at the health status at the top. "Good" is fine. "Caution" or "Bad" means your drive is failing — and your data is at risk right now.

✓ Caution or Bad = back up your files today, before the drive dies completely.
6

Run a full malware scan with Malwarebytes Free

Some malware runs hidden background processes that eat CPU and cause constant freezing. The free version of Malwarebytes is solid. Run a full scan — it takes 20–40 minutes but it's worth it.

✓ If it finds and removes things but the freezing continues, there may be a deeper rootkit issue. That's a professional cleanup job.
7

Check for Windows updates running silently in the background

Go to Settings → Windows Update and let any pending updates finish. Windows updates can spike your disk for hours — especially on older machines with spinning hard drives. If your PC is mid-update, let it complete before assuming it's broken.

✓ Stuck on "Preparing to install" for more than an hour? Force a restart and let it retry.
8

Test your power supply — especially if freezes happen under load

A dying PSU delivers inconsistent voltage. If your PC freezes specifically during gaming, video editing, or other heavy tasks — and runs fine at idle — the power supply is a strong suspect. Try a different outlet and power strip first. If that changes nothing, the PSU may need testing or replacement.

✓ Random hard freezes only during gaming = PSU or GPU issue until proven otherwise.
9

Pull error codes from Event Viewer

Press Windows + R, type eventvwr, hit Enter. Go to Windows Logs → System. Look for red "Error" entries that match the time your PC froze. Screenshot them — these codes are exactly what a tech needs to narrow things down fast.

✓ Common culprits: Kernel-Power (sudden crash/PSU), disk errors, driver failures. Any of those warrant a bench diagnostic.
⚠️ Clicking or grinding sounds from your PC? That's a dying hard drive. Power it off immediately and don't turn it back on. Every boot risks making data recovery harder and more expensive. Bring it to us.
💡 Still freezing after all 9 steps? You've done the right thing — you now know more about your machine than you did before. If it's still happening, something is failing at a hardware level. The next step is a $75 bench diagnostic — credited toward your repair if you move forward. Call us at (908) 428-9558.
What NJ Customers Say

Real Repairs, Real Results

From Bridgewater to Princeton, customers across central New Jersey trust us to fix what other shops couldn't diagnose.

★★★★★

"My PC was freezing every 30 seconds and I thought I needed a new computer. Dave's ran a diagnostic, found a failing hard drive, recovered all my files, and installed a new SSD. It runs faster than when I bought it."

Michael R. Bridgewater, NJ · Google Review
★★★★★

"Brought in my daughter's laptop that kept freezing mid-class. Turned out to be overheating from dust and old thermal paste. Fixed same day, runs perfectly. Straight answers, fair price."

Karen S. Flemington, NJ · Google Review
★★★★★

"They told me exactly what was wrong — bad RAM stick — and had it fixed in a day. Other places quoted me $300+ for a 'full tune-up.' Dave's charged $75 for the diagnostic (credited to repair) and the repair itself was totally reasonable."

NJ Repair Insights

What We See Most in Central NJ Shops

After 15 years of bench work in Somerville, here's what's actually behind most freezing PCs that come through our door.

💾  Failing Hard Drives — #1 Cause

Spinning hard drives fail progressively — they freeze before they die completely. CrystalDiskInfo showing "Caution" is your window to recover data and replace the drive before total failure. We see this multiple times a week from Somerset and Middlesex County customers.

🌡️  Overheating in Older Laptops

Laptops 3–6 years old that haven't been cleaned internally will throttle under load — the CPU drops to near-zero speed to prevent damage, which looks like freezing. A cleaning and thermal paste reapplication fixes this permanently.

🦠  Malware Misdiagnosed as Hardware

A surprising number of "hardware" problems we see are actually malware. Cryptominers and adware run background processes that max out CPU and RAM. Customers often spend money on hardware before ruling this out.

⚡  Power Supply Issues Under Load

PSU failure is especially common in gaming PCs 4–7 years old. The capacitors degrade and can no longer maintain stable voltage under GPU load. The system freezes or crashes mid-game — but runs fine at idle, which makes it easy to misattribute to the GPU.

PC Repair FAQs for NJ Customers

Looking for computer repair near me in Somerset, Hunterdon, Mercer, or Middlesex County? Here are the questions we hear most at the counter.

How much does it cost to diagnose a freezing PC in New Jersey?

Our diagnostic fee is $75, credited toward your repair if you move forward. We run a full bench diagnostic — not a guess. If the repair isn't worth it, we'll tell you straight and you'll still know exactly what failed.

Can a freezing PC be fixed without losing my files?

Almost always yes — unless the drive has already failed badly. Most freezing causes (overheating, bad RAM, malware, Windows issues) don't affect your data at all. Even with a failing drive, we attempt data recovery before anything else. We'll always tell you the risk up front.

My PC only freezes when gaming or under load — what is that?

That pattern almost always points to a power supply or GPU issue. A dying PSU can't deliver stable voltage under load, so the system freezes or hard-crashes. Overheating is the other common cause — the GPU or CPU throttles when cooling fails under load. Both are diagnosable with our $75 bench diagnostic.

Is there a computer repair service near me that can recover data from a failing drive?

Yes. Data recovery in NJ starts at $199 at our Somerville shop. If CrystalDiskInfo shows Caution or Bad, or you hear clicking or grinding, stop using it immediately and bring it in — every additional boot on a failing drive risks permanent data loss.

Do you offer in-home or on-site computer repair near me in NJ?

No — we're a drop-off shop only at 75 N Bridge St, Somerville NJ 08876. We don't do house calls or on-site visits. Curbside drop-off is available if you can't come inside. Drive times from most central NJ locations are 15–30 minutes.

How long does computer repair take in New Jersey?

Most repairs are completed within 1–3 business days. Screen replacements and standard virus removals often turn around same or next day. Data recovery timelines vary depending on drive condition. We give you a realistic timeline at drop-off — we don't ghost you in the queue.

My PC won't turn on after freezing — what will it cost to fix?

We'd need to run the $75 diagnostic first. A PC that won't power on after repeated freezing can be anything from a dead power supply to a failed motherboard. Once we know what we're dealing with, we'll give you a straight quote with no obligation to proceed. The $75 is credited if you move forward.
