You opened Task Manager to find out why the fans are roaring and there it is: WMI Provider Host chewing 30, 50, sometimes 90 percent of your CPU. You've never installed anything called WMI, you don't know what a Provider Host is, and the internet's first suggestion is a paragraph of acronyms.
Plain English, from a bench that sees this weekly: WMI Provider Host (the process is WmiPrvSE.exe) is a legitimate part of Windows — it's the switchboard other programs call when they want to ask the system questions. "What's the CPU temperature?" "How much battery is left?" "What's installed?" When it hogs the CPU, WMI itself is almost never the problem. Some other program is spamming it with questions — and your job is to find out which one.
Brief spikes are normal. WMI jumping around for a few seconds after boot, after plugging in hardware, or while a monitoring app launches — that's Tuesday. The problem worth solving is sustained high CPU: minutes at a time, every day, fans audible, laptop hot. If that's you, continue.
This clears it in a lot of cases, at least for a while — and "how long it stays fixed" is itself a clue.
Windows keeps a log of exactly who's been badgering WMI. Finding the guilty program takes five minutes:
Who it usually turns out to be: manufacturer bloatware and "system utility" suites, hardware monitoring tools, printer software from a printer you owned two houses ago, or an aging antivirus. Once named, the sentence is simple — update it if you use it, uninstall it if you don't. (A restart after either, then re-check Task Manager.)
Two supporting moves while you're in there: run sfc /scannow from an admin Terminal to repair corrupted system files, and check Settings > Windows Update — WMI-adjacent bugs get patched regularly.
Malware loves WMI — cryptominers and persistence tricks use it because it's built into Windows and looks innocent in Task Manager. Treat high WMI activity with suspicion when it comes with these tells: it spikes when the machine should be idle, there's no ClientProcessId you can pin it on (or the PID vanishes when you look), your browser grew toolbars, or the whole machine got slow and weird at the same time — the broader symptoms in our guide to telling if your computer has a virus. Run a full scan with Microsoft Defender (here's how to run a proper one), and if anything's found — or the scan finds nothing but the symptoms scream otherwise — that's when a professional virus removal pays for itself. Miners in particular are good at hiding from the tools they've compromised.
Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe) eating memory or CPU? DWM draws every window, animation, and transparency effect on your screen. When it balloons, the display driver is suspect number one — update it from NVIDIA/AMD/Intel directly, or roll it back if this started right after an update. Suspects two and three: turn off transparency effects (Settings > Personalization > Colors) and, on multi-monitor HDR setups, try toggling HDR off as a test. Steady climb that never comes back down even after closing everything = classic leaky driver behavior.
Service Host (svchost.exe) — twenty copies of it? Normal; each hosts Windows services. One copy pinning the CPU is usually Windows Update or the Superfetch/SysMain service doing maintenance at a bad time. You can, and it'll be back in seconds — Windows restarts it because parts of the system depend on it. Killing it repeatedly can also glitch the programs mid-question. Restart the service properly instead (first section above).
The real one is a core Windows file. Malware does sometimes impersonate it: in Task Manager, right-click it > Open file location. The genuine article lives in C:\Windows\System32\wbem. Anywhere else — Downloads, AppData, a random folder — treat it as hostile and get the machine looked at.
Then you've already caught your culprit without Event Viewer. Update that program first; uninstall/reinstall it second; live without it third.

Bring it in if the CPU stays pinned after the service restart and an Event Viewer hunt, if the culprit PID leads nowhere or keeps changing, if a scan found something (or clearly missed something), or if the machine is hot, loud, and slow enough that you've stopped trusting it.
