SSD Data Recovery in New Jersey: Why It's Not the Same as a Hard Drive

If your SSD has stopped showing up or your laptop suddenly will not boot, the instinct is to treat it like any failed drive. But solid-state drives fail in their own way, and one feature in particular, TRIM, can turn recovery into a race against the clock. Here is what SSD data recovery in New Jersey actually involves.

Deleted files on an SSD? Every minute matters with TRIM — shut the machine down, then call 908-428-9558 and I'll tell you the next safe step. Free evaluation.

I am David at Dave's Computers in Somerville. I have watched SSDs go from a luxury to the default drive in nearly every new laptop, and the recovery rules are genuinely different from spinning hard drives.

Why SSDs are a different problem

Hard drive
  • Spinning platters and moving heads
  • Deleted data usually stays put until overwritten
  • Fails gradually, often with warning noises
  • Physical failures need a clean room
SSD
  • Flash memory chips, no moving parts
  • TRIM can wipe deleted data almost immediately
  • Often fails suddenly with no warning
  • Controller failures lock away healthy chips

The big one is TRIM. On an SSD, when you delete a file or reformat, the operating system tells the drive it can permanently erase those blocks to stay fast. On a hard drive that data would linger and be recoverable for a long time. On an SSD it can be gone in minutes. That single difference is why speed matters so much more with SSD recovery.

⚠️

With a deleted file on an SSD, time is the enemy

If you have accidentally deleted something important from an SSD, stop using the computer and shut it down. The longer it runs, the more chance TRIM permanently clears those blocks. Acting in the first hours gives the best odds.

How SSDs fail

The most common SSD failure I see is a controller problem. The flash chips holding your data are perfectly fine, but the controller that reads them has died, so the drive does not show up at all. There is also flash wear, where cells degrade over years of writes, firmware corruption, and the same logical issues hard drives get, like a corrupted file system or accidental reformat.

The frustrating part of a controller failure is that the data is sitting right there, intact, behind a dead gatekeeper. Recovering it means getting around or replacing that controller, which is specialized work.

What can be recovered in-house

Logical SSD failures, corruption, accidental deletion caught quickly, a reformat, a drive that is detected but not readable, are recovered in-house and generally run in the $199 to $599 range depending on complexity. The drive stays in the Somerville shop.

Severe controller or chip-level failures that require specialized equipment to read the flash directly are lab-level work. When a case needs that, I tell you upfront, refund the in-house portion, and refer you to a partner I trust. More detail lives on the SSD data recovery page, with the general approach on data recovery in New Jersey.

SSD not showing up? Shut it down and bring it in.

The sooner an SSD with lost data is evaluated, the better the odds. Free evaluation, clear quote, honest answer on in-house versus lab.

Common questions

Can deleted files be recovered from an SSD?

Sometimes, but only if you act fast. Because of TRIM, an SSD can permanently erase deleted blocks within minutes of deletion. Shut the computer down immediately and bring it in. The sooner it is evaluated, the better the chance.

My laptop SSD isn't detected. Is my data lost?

Not necessarily. A very common SSD failure is a dead controller, where the flash chips holding your data are intact but cannot be read. That is often recoverable. Bring the drive or the laptop in for an evaluation.

Is SSD recovery more expensive than hard drive recovery?

In-house logical SSD recoveries fall in the same $199 to $599 range as hard drives, depending on complexity. Chip-level work that needs specialized lab equipment is more involved, and in those cases you are refunded before any referral.

Do you recover M.2 and NVMe drives?

Yes. We work with SATA SSDs, M.2 drives, and NVMe drives from laptops and desktops. Bring the drive, or the whole machine if you cannot remove it, and we will take it from there.
