A desktop that has to sit next to the router because it has no Wi-Fi, a tower whose wireless keeps dropping, or a PC that needs Bluetooth for a controller or headphones: the answer is an internal wireless card with real antennas, not a dongle. When a Desktop Needs a Wireless Card
Three situations bring this job to my counter.
The tower never had Wi-Fi. Most business desktops and many home towers ship without wireless because they were expected to plug into a wall jack. Then the computer moves to a bedroom, a basement office or a room in the house that was never wired, and a long cable across the hallway is the only option. An internal card ends that.
The Wi-Fi it had has failed or gone unreliable. The network icon shows nothing, the adapter has vanished from Windows, or the connection drops every few minutes. Sometimes the card has died; just as often, on the Dell and HP towers I see from around New Jersey, the antenna connection came loose in a move or the factory card was a budget part that never held a signal.
The tower needs Bluetooth. A wireless keyboard and mouse, a game controller, a headset, a printer or a speaker. Desktops without a wireless card usually have no Bluetooth at all, and the same card supplies both.
If the Wi-Fi drops on every device in the house, it isn't the desktop. That's the router or the provider; my home wireless setup service covers it. This page is for the one desktop that can't connect or can't hold on.

I confirm what has failed and check the parts around it. The diagnostic is $75 for a Dell, HP, Lenovo or other major-brand desktop and $149 for a custom-built or boutique PC, credited toward the work when you approve it.

One flat quote
You get one number for the card and antenna installation, parts and labor together, before any work starts. Parts are supplied by the shop with a manufacturer warranty. Nothing beyond the diagnostic is charged until you say yes.
Bring your Wi-Fi password and the tower is connected to your network before pickup. Bluetooth is included with the card.

Repair and test
The work is done to the manufacturer's service documentation for your model, then the tower is tested on the bench before you're called for pickup.

Can you add Wi-Fi to a desktop that never had it?
Yes. Most Dell, HP and Lenovo towers built in the last several years can take an internal wireless card and antenna, and older towers and custom builds take a card in an expansion slot. Either way it becomes part of the computer, not a dongle hanging off the back.
Why not just use a USB Wi-Fi adapter?
For a spare bedroom PC, an adapter is fine. For a home office, a gaming PC or anything that streams video, an internal card with real antennas gets a stronger, steadier signal, supports the newer Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 bands, and doesn't drop out. It also adds Bluetooth.

My desktop's Wi-Fi used to work and now it keeps dropping. Is that the card?
Often, yes. Wireless cards fail, antenna connections come loose when a tower is moved, and some factory cards were never good. I test the card and the antenna before quoting.
Will I get Bluetooth too?
Yes. The cards I install include Bluetooth, so a wireless keyboard and mouse, a controller, headphones or a speaker connect without an adapter.
Which Wi-Fi standard should I get?
I match the card to the router you have and your internet plan. For most homes and offices around Somerset County that's Wi-Fi 6 or 6E; if you have a Wi-Fi 7 router, a Wi-Fi 7 card makes sense.
