Just the tower. Leave the monitor, keyboard and cables home unless the problem involves them. Write down your Windows password, tell me what it's doing and when it started, and I'll give you a ticket.

The $75 diagnostic
Power supply on the load tester, memory test, drive health, temperatures under a stress run, graphics in a second system if needed, and a look at Windows. I don't guess from the symptom; I test until the cause is confirmed.

One number for parts and labor, with the $75 already credited. If the repair doesn't make sense against the value of the machine, I'll tell you that instead and we'll talk about an upgrade or a new build.

Repair, test, pickup
Parts are quality retail units with a manufacturer warranty. After the repair the tower runs a stress test so the problem is confirmed gone, not just quiet. I call when it's ready. Most jobs: 24 to 48 hours.
Repair, Upgrade or Replace?
The diagnostic answers this too, and I'll give you a straight answer even when it's "don't spend the money."
A desktop is the easiest kind of computer to keep alive, because almost everything in it can be replaced one part at a time. A dead power supply, a failed drive or a tired graphics card is a repair, and the tower goes home working. A machine that's sound but slow is usually an upgrade: an NVMe SSD, more memory or a newer graphics card gets most of the performance of a new PC for a fraction of the cost. The full priority order is in which PC upgrade to do first.
Replacement makes sense when the fix would cost more than half of a new machine, when the processor and board are too old to take Windows 11, or when what you want to do has outgrown the platform. For a gaming or creator machine, a decent new custom build from my shop starts at $2,500, a workstation build at $2,000, and under those numbers upgrading what you have is the better spend. Where can I get a desktop computer repaired in New Jersey?
Dave's Computers at 75 N Bridge St in Somerville, NJ takes desktop towers on a drop-off basis, Monday through Friday 10 to 5 and Saturday 9 to 2, no appointment needed. I'm the only technician, so the person you talk to at the counter is the person who fixes the machine. Customers come from Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex and Mercer counties.

Prebuilts often use proprietary power supplies or motherboards, and part of the diagnostic is telling you what can be replaced with a standard part and what can't.
Do I need to bring my monitor and keyboard?
No. Bring the tower only, unless the problem involves the monitor or a specific cable. Write down your Windows password or set up a temporary account, because the diagnostic needs to log in. My guide to bringing a desktop tower in covers how to move a heavy gaming PC safely.
Is my old desktop worth repairing?
Usually, if the fix is a single part like a power supply, a drive or a graphics card. The diagnostic gives you a real number to weigh against replacement, and if the repair doesn't make sense I'll say so. When the machine is sound but slow, an upgrade is often the better spend than either a repair or a new PC.
Do you come to my house to fix a desktop?
Residential desktop repair is drop-off only at the Somerville shop. On-site service is available for business clients. Most homeowners are within 30 minutes of the shop, and the directions section on this page has drive times from the towns I see most.
What warranty comes with a desktop repair?
