Sim Racing and VR PC Builds in New Jersey

Triple monitors and VR headsets ask more of a PC than any flat-screen game, and a tower that's a tier short shows it as stutter, dropped frames and a queasy stomach. Why Sim Racing and VR Are Harder on a PC Than Flat-Screen Gaming

The same game on the same card behaves very differently once you add two more screens or strap on a headset.

A single 1440p monitor is about 3.7 million pixels. Three of them is about 11 million, and the graphics card draws every one for every frame. A card that was comfortable on one screen ends up in the 40s on three, and in a racing sim that's the difference between a car you can place on the apex and one that feels like it's on ice.

VR is a different kind of hard. A headset renders two images at once, one per eye, each above 1080p on current hardware, at the headset's refresh rate without a hiccup. On a monitor, a dropped frame is a stutter. In a headset, it's the world lagging behind your head, and your inner ear reads that as something being wrong. Motion sickness in VR is mostly a frame-rate problem. iRacing says as much on its system requirements page: anyone running VR should treat its "recommended" tier as the minimum.

Averages lie in VR. A card that averages 90 frames per second but dips to 60 is worse in a headset than one that holds 72 flat. I spec for the floor.

Racing sims add one more wrinkle: physics. iRacing and Assetto Corsa run tire, suspension and force-feedback math hundreds of times a second, mostly on one or two CPU cores. Lots of slow cores don't help; fast cores do, which is why a sim rig is specified differently from a streaming or editing tower.

What Drives the Spec, in Order

The order I work through every sim and VR quote. Budget goes to the top of the list first.

Graphics card class

Triples and VR are both pixel-bound, so the graphics card gets the largest share of the budget in every sim build I do. I pick the class by the pixel count you're actually driving: one 1440p screen, three of them, a headset at its native per-eye resolution, or both. Tom's Hardware's GPU hierarchy is a fair public reference for how the classes stack up.

Video memory matters. iRacing lists 8GB as recommended and 10GB or more as high end, and triples and VR fill it faster than a single screen.

CPU single-thread speed

Sim physics and the game's main thread want a fast core more than many cores. I pick the processor for per-core speed and cache, with enough cores left for headset software, telemetry and voice chat, on a current AM5 or LGA1851 platform with DDR5.

Memory and storage

16GB is the floor iRacing publishes; I don't build a sim rig with less than 32GB, because the headset runtime and overlays push past 16GB quickly. Microsoft Flight Simulator streams scenery constantly, so a fast NVMe SSD with room for several large installs is part of the tier.

USB bandwidth and port count

A wheel base, pedals, shifter, handbrake, button box, headset and trackers can fill a rear panel and then some, and some wheel bases and headsets are fussy about sharing a USB controller. I choose a board with enough rear ports on more than one controller so the wheel doesn't drop out when the headset wakes up. Meta publishes its own PC requirements for Quest Link, and the cabled mode wants a proper USB 3 port, not a hub.

Port count is hard to fix after the build. Bring the list of everything that plugs in.

Power supply, cooling and a case with room

A high-class graphics card needs an ATX 3.x power supply with the native 12V-2x6 connector and headroom to spare. Long races keep the card and CPU at full load for an hour or more, so the case gets real airflow and a cooler sized for sustained heat. If the rig lives in a shared room, see my quiet PC build page.

What I'll Tell You If a Build Isn't the Answer

I'd rather quote a graphics card than sell a tower you don't need.

A fair number of the sim and VR customers who come in from around central New Jersey already own a decent gaming tower. If the processor is a recent fast-core part on a current platform and the memory is already 32GB, what's holding the rig back is usually the graphics card and the power supply feeding it. Then I'll quote a graphics card replacement and PSU instead of a build. Which PC upgrade first walks through the order.

The headset maker's own requirements page wins over anything I write here. Headsets change every year or two, and the box you own is what the PC has to meet. Bring the model and I'll check it against the manufacturer's current list.

Under $2,500, I'll steer you to an upgrade. That's the floor for a sim or VR build at my shop as of this writing, and below it a new tower compromises on the graphics card, the one part a sim rig can't compromise on. An upgrade through my custom PC repair and upgrades service puts the whole budget where it matters.

If Microsoft Flight Simulator is your main game rather than an occasional one, read my flight simulator PC page, because the memory and storage priorities shift. If you don't race or fly at all, the general custom PC build page fits better and probably costs less.

What I See on the Bench in New Jersey

Composite examples, built from the kinds of jobs that come across my Somerville counter.

A Bridgewater customer's triple-monitor iRacing tower. Bought as a single-monitor gaming PC, then two more screens were added. Frame rate fell into the 40s and the car felt unpredictable in traffic. CPU and memory were fine. The fix was a higher-class graphics card and an ATX 3.x power supply, quoted as an upgrade rather than a build; the customer kept the case and drives.

A Hillsborough customer's first VR rig. New headset, older tower, and ten minutes in Beat Saber left them nauseous. The card averaged a fine number but dropped frames every few seconds. The platform was three generations old with slow memory, so the honest answer was a VR-tier build. The old tower went home to become the family PC.

A Piscataway customer's wheel that kept disconnecting. Wheel base, pedals, shifter and headset all on one USB controller through a hub, and the wheel dropped force feedback whenever the headset woke. No new parts; I re-cabled the devices across the board's separate controllers and the drops stopped. That's what I plan for when I choose the board for a build.

What does a sim racing PC build cost in New Jersey?

Sim racing and VR builds at my shop start at $2,500 as of this writing. The $150 consultation is credited in full toward the build when you approve the quote. The quote names the tier and the price, and you get a written spec sheet at pickup. Under $2,500, I'll recommend upgrading your existing tower instead.

Do I need a different PC for VR than for triple monitors?

Not a different PC, but often a different tier. Triples need a graphics card that can push three times the pixels of one screen. A VR headset needs a high, steady frame rate with no drops. A current headset on high settings usually lands in the same tier as triples, and running both pushes you up one more tier.

Can you build an iRacing PC in New Jersey that also runs Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Yes. iRacing leans on the graphics card and single-thread CPU speed, while Microsoft Flight Simulator also wants more memory and a fast SSD for streaming scenery. A build specified for both is a little higher in tier than one for iRacing alone, and I'll say so in the quote.

Will you tell me the exact parts before I pay?

The quote gives you the performance tier, what it will run at what settings, and the price. The written spec sheet comes with the machine at pickup. I use quality retail parts with manufacturer warranties, no proprietary boards, and every build leaves with Windows 11 installed, BIOS current, memory at rated speed and a stress test done.

Can my current gaming PC be made VR ready instead of building new?

Often, yes. If the CPU and platform are recent, a graphics card upgrade plus a power supply that can feed it may be all a headset needs. That's the first thing I check, and if it's the right answer I'll quote the upgrade instead of a build. The $149 diagnostic for a custom or gaming PC is credited toward that work.

Do you set up the wheel, pedals and headset too?

I build and test the tower and make sure the ports and bandwidth are there for everything you told me about. If you bring the wheel base, pedals or headset to pickup, I'll confirm they're recognized and the drivers are installed before you leave. Rig assembly and in-game tuning are yours to do at home.
