Cursor Jumping or Drifting
The pointer moves on its own, skips across the screen, or lags behind your finger.
Won't Click
The physical click stopped working, feels stuck, or only works on one side.
Raised or Bulging Touchpad
Touchpad sitting higher than the palm rest. That's often a swollen battery; stop charging it and bring it in right away.
Touchpad Dead
No response at all, or it only works after a restart.

Is it the touchpad, a setting, or the battery?
A touchpad that misbehaves isn't always a bad touchpad. It can be a driver or setting, a loose cable, or a swollen battery pushing up from underneath, which is a safety issue. The diagnostic finds the real cause first, so you only pay for a new touchpad if you need one. When the touchpad is at fault, I replace it, and on laptops where it's built into the palm rest the quote covers that assembly.

How much does laptop trackpad repair cost in NJ?
It depends on the cause and the model, so I quote it at drop-off after the $75 diagnostic, and the $75 is credited toward the repair. You approve the flat price before any work starts.
Can you repair the touchpad on my laptop, or does it have to be replaced?
When the touchpad itself has failed, it gets replaced with a part made for your model. Many touchpad problems turn out to be a cable, a setting or a swollen battery instead, and the diagnostic finds that first so you don't pay for parts you don't need.
My touchpad is raised and won't click. Is that dangerous?
It can be. A raised touchpad is a classic sign of a swollen battery pushing up from underneath. Stop charging the laptop, don't press on it, and bring it in. The fix is usually a battery replacement, then a check that the touchpad clicks properly again.
Why does my laptop cursor jump around by itself?
It can be the touchpad hardware, a driver problem, moisture, or pressure from a swelling battery. The diagnostic tells which one it is before anything is replaced.
Can I just use a mouse instead?
At a desk, sure. It doesn't help on the go, and if a swollen battery is the cause, the battery problem is still there. Bring it in so you know what you're dealing with.
Do you repair ThinkPad TrackPoint buttons?
Yes. The TrackPoint and its buttons are part of the ThinkPad keyboard and touchpad area, and I handle them on most ThinkPad models. See my Lenovo laptop repair page for more.
How long does a touchpad repair take?
If the part for your model is on hand it can be quick; otherwise I order it and give you a timeline with the quote. Rush service is available for $100.
Will my files be safe during the repair?
Yes. A touchpad repair doesn't touch your drive, and the laptop stays in my Somerville shop the whole time.
