Signs Your PC Is Due for Maintenance

Performance doesn't fall off a cliff. It leaks away a little every month.

A PC that was quiet and fast two years ago and is louder and slower today hasn't worn out. It's overdue. These are the things New Jersey PC owners mention when they finally bring one in:

What you noticeWhat it points to
Fans are louder than they used to be, even at the desktopDust and tired cooling. The PC is working harder to stay at the same temperature.
Frame rates have dropped in games that used to run wellHeat forcing the processor or graphics card to slow itself down.
Random stutters, crashes or restarts under loadCould be heat, power, memory or drivers. If it happens often, start with gaming PC repair instead.
It's been more than a year and nobody has opened itNothing is wrong yet. That's the ideal time.
You can see dust through the glass panelWhat you can see is a fraction of what's in the coolers.
You're about to spend money on an upgradeFind out what shape the rest of the PC is in first.

Startup and background cleanupLaunchers, updaters and leftovers that eat memory and frame time trimmed back.

How Often to Bring It In

There's no contract. Come back when it makes sense.

Your setupSuggested interval
Typical home or office custom PC, on a deskOnce a year
Gaming or streaming PC used hard every dayEvery 6 to 12 months
Pets, smokers, carpet, or the PC lives on the floorEvery 6 months
Workstation that earns moneyEvery 6 months, ahead of busy season. See workstation repair.
Just bought a used or secondhand gaming PCNow, before you trust it

Only need one piece of this? PC cleaning and thermal service covers dust and heat alone, and the PC tune-up covers a slow Windows install. For protection against viruses between visits, see the security protection plan.

I engaged "Dave's Computer" to build a new custom build Windows 11 computer as replacement for the Windows 10 machine. I presented my thoughts and needs to Dave about the new unit and he asked some basic questions as to my needs and want for the new unit. We touched on cost for the unit and I left...

I have been going to Dave's Computers for years because he always fixes my problems. I also use his anti-virus and it is as good as any, if not better, than others that I would have to pay much more for. If you're having problems, go to Dave's. He doesn't break the bank and he solves the problems.

Over the last decade or so, whenever I had a computer problem, I went to Dave. I recently had a very worrisome crash; the system failed to boot up. (I hadn't needed to use him for about 3 years.) I paid the "rush fee" on Saturday when dropping the machine off with the weekend agent. By Monday...

"As a Broker of over 40 years in New Jersey I rely on my computer help", which is the artery to my success and business. Thank goodness Dave's is here for me with the messes I get into with scammers, land grabbers and just uneccesary things that I pick up. The most effective virus program have ever...

I had previously tried to build my own PC to no success. Even though right now it is really tough to get a PC built due to the price increases with RAM’s, GPU’s and other parts because of AI, I still really wanted to get one for myself. I came across Dave’s Computers online and went in for a...

Custom PC Maintenance: Questions From NJ Customers

What people ask at the counter before handing over the tower.

What is custom PC maintenance?

It's a scheduled checkup for a custom-built or gaming PC: a full inspection, deep internal cleaning, a cooling check, updates where they help, a drive health check and a stress test under load. The goal is to catch the small problems before they become a dead PC.

How often should a gaming PC be serviced?

Once a year suits most PCs. Every six months makes sense with pets, smokers, carpeted floors, a PC that sits on the floor, or one that runs hard for hours every day.

Is this the same as a PC cleaning or a tune-up?

No. My PC cleaning service is about dust and heat, and my PC tune-up is about Windows running slowly. Maintenance covers hardware and software together for custom and gaming PCs, and ends with a stress test under load.

Will I lose my files or settings?

No. Maintenance doesn't wipe or reinstall anything. Your games, files, settings and overclock profiles stay as they are. If the drive health check finds a drive on its way out, you hear about it first.

Do you service liquid-cooled PCs?

Yes for sealed all-in-one liquid coolers, which are checked for pump noise, flow and temperatures as part of the visit, and replaced if they've failed. I don't service custom open-loop water cooling.

My PC wasn't built by you. Can you still maintain it?

Yes. Custom builds from anyone, DIY builds, and boutique prebuilts from CyberPowerPC, iBUYPOWER, Skytech, NZXT, Origin, Alienware and similar are all welcome.

How long does it take?

Most maintenance visits take one to two days, because the stress test runs for hours, not minutes. Drop it off before a trip and it's ready when you're back.

What if you find a failing part?

You get a call with what I found, what it means, and one quote to put it right. Nothing extra is done without your say-so.
