AMD vs Nvidia in 2026: Which Graphics Card Brand to Build Around

AMD vs Nvidia is the oldest argument in PC building, and in 2026 it has a more useful answer than it has had in years: both make cards worth buying, and the right one depends on the resolution you play at, how much you care about ray tracing and upscaling, whether the PC also does creative work, and what the two cards cost on the day you build. We install both brands every week at our Somerville shop. Here is how the current lineups compare on the measurements that matter, using independent review data, and what we put in builds at each budget.

The short answer. For 1440p gaming on a budget between $600 and $800, AMD's Radeon RX 9070 XT is the value pick: within a few percent of the RTX 5070 Ti in regular rendering, with the same 16 GB of memory, for a lot less money. For ray tracing, DLSS 4 multi frame generation, creator software that leans on CUDA, or anything above the 9070 XT's tier, Nvidia is the answer, because as of this writing AMD does not sell a card that competes above it. Below $350, Nvidia's RTX 5050 and 5060 are the cards we use most. Buy the card, not the brand.

The 2026 Lineups Side by Side

Street prices and picks cross-checked against Tom's Hardware's best graphics cards guide (updated July 30, 2026). Most cards still sell above their launch prices, so the tiers matter more than the exact dollars.

Head to Head: RX 9070 XT vs RTX 5070 Ti

These two cards are where the brand decision actually gets made in 2026, and TechSpot's 18-game review of the RX 9070 XT is the cleanest independent comparison.

TechSpot's verdict at the time was that the 9070 XT offered "solid value" if pricing stayed near its $600 launch figure. It did not stay there, but neither did the 5070 Ti's $749 launch price, and the relative position is unchanged: the AMD card is the better value for rasterized gaming at 1440p and 4K, and the Nvidia card is meaningfully faster with ray tracing on. The Four Things That Decide It

Raw speed is close enough at the tiers where both brands compete. These are the factors we actually ask customers about.

Upscaling and frame generation: DLSS 4 vs FSR Upscaling

Both brands now upscale with machine learning, which is the biggest change from the AMD vs Nvidia arguments of a few years ago. Nvidia's DLSS 4 brought a new transformer model to every RTX card and reserved multi frame generation, which can insert up to three generated frames per rendered frame, for the RTX 50 series. AMD renamed FSR 4 to FSR Upscaling and folded it into a suite it calls FSR Redstone, with frame generation, ray regeneration and radiance caching alongside the upscaler; the machine-learning upscaler runs on RX 9000 and RX 7000 cards, with RX 6000 support planned for 2027. In practice DLSS is supported in more games and has a longer track record, and multi frame generation is a real advantage on high-refresh monitors. FSR Upscaling closed most of the image quality gap. If a specific game you play only supports one of them, that decides it.

VRAM per dollar

Memory is where AMD wins the mid-range. TechSpot's testing of 8 GB, 12 GB and 16 GB cards across resolutions concluded that 12 GB is the minimum and 16 GB is the target at 1440p and above. The RX 9070 XT gives you 16 GB for about $759; on the Nvidia side at the same tier, the RTX 5070 at $659 has 12 GB and 16 GB means stepping up to the RTX 5070 Ti at about $1,099 (the lower-tier RTX 5060 Ti also comes in a 16 GB version, but it is a slower card). For a PC you plan to keep four years at 1440p, that is the strongest single argument for the AMD card.

Ray tracing and the top end

AMD's RDNA 4 architecture added third-generation ray tracing accelerators and second-generation AI accelerators, and the 9070 XT is far better at ray tracing than AMD's previous cards. It still trails the 5070 Ti by about a fifth in ray-traced games. If you play with ray tracing on as a rule, or you want a 4K card, Nvidia is the only choice above the 9070 XT tier. That is not brand loyalty; there is no AMD card to buy there.

Software, drivers and creator work

Nvidia holds the large majority of Steam's graphics card share, and the most common individual cards in the July 2026 survey are all Nvidia (the RTX 3060, RTX 4060 laptop and RTX 4060). That popularity is why game developers test Nvidia first and why DLSS shows up in more titles. For creative software, CUDA and Nvidia's encoder are still what many editing, 3D and AI tools expect, which is why our workstation builds lean Nvidia. On drivers, both AMD's Adrenalin software and the Nvidia App are stable in 2026; the driver problems we fix are usually Windows replacing a good driver with a bad one, which we covered in our post on Windows 11 silently downgrading GPU drivers, and that hits both brands.

FAQ

Is AMD or Nvidia better for gaming in 2026?

At 1440p, AMD's RX 9070 XT is the better value: TechSpot measured it about 6% behind the RTX 5070 Ti in regular rendering and about 1% behind at 4K, with the same 16 GB of memory, for roughly $340 less at July 2026 street prices. Nvidia is better for ray tracing (about 21% faster in that test), for DLSS 4 multi frame generation, and for anything above the 9070 XT's tier, where AMD has no competing card.

Is the RX 9070 XT as good as the RTX 5070 Ti?

Close in standard rendering (6% slower at 1440p, 1% at 4K in TechSpot's 18-game review), noticeably slower with ray tracing (21% at 1440p), and about 20% higher power draw. At its price it delivered about 29% better cost per frame. Both list a 750 W power supply.

Does DLSS make Nvidia worth the extra money?

Sometimes. DLSS 4 is supported in more games, has a longer track record, and its multi frame generation on RTX 50 cards is a real advantage on high-refresh monitors. AMD's FSR Upscaling (formerly FSR 4) has closed most of the image quality gap and runs on RX 9000 and RX 7000 cards. If the games you play support both, the price difference usually wins; if a key game only supports one, that decides it.

How much VRAM do I need in 2026?

TechSpot's testing found 12 GB is the minimum and 16 GB the target at 1440p and above. That is the main reason we prefer the 16 GB RX 9070 XT over the 12 GB RTX 5070 at the same tier; on the Nvidia side, 16 GB at that performance level means the RTX 5070 Ti.

Are AMD drivers still worse than Nvidia's?

Not in our experience in 2026. Both AMD's Adrenalin software and the Nvidia App are stable, and the driver problems we fix most often come from Windows Update replacing a working driver, which affects both brands. Nvidia's larger install base does mean developers test Nvidia first and DLSS appears in more games.

Which graphics card brand does Dave's Computers install most?

It depends on the tier. Nvidia for budget 1080p cards and upgrade jobs (RTX 5050 and 5060), AMD's RX 9070 XT for most 1440p builds, Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti for ray tracing and high-refresh buyers, and Nvidia RTX 5080 or 5090 for 4K and high-end builds.
