A new customer came into the shop this week with a story I hear more often than I would like. He bought a prebuilt gaming PC online. It ran fine for a while, then it stopped booting. No BIOS screen, no POST, nothing he tried would bring it back.
This is exactly why, when someone asks me whether they should order a prebuilt online or have me build a custom PC from scratch, I always recommend the custom build. Not because the parts are different. Because of everything that happens after the parts go in the case.
The machine was a modern AM5 platform build: an MSI PRO B850-P WIFI motherboard with an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D and 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory. Solid parts. On paper, nothing wrong with this build at all.
In practice, the system had a memory timing issue, a known quirk of the AM5 platform and DDR5 memory training. The board would not POST to BIOS. I went through the standard playbook: reseating memory, single stick testing, CMOS clear, the usual steps. No luck. Then it got worse. The BIOS would not update. BIOS Flashback would not take. Eventually the BIOS screen stopped showing up entirely.

Here is the part that frustrates me. I went through MSI's BIOS release notes for this board line by line and compared them against the symptoms. The memory compatibility fix for exactly this issue was already published in a BIOS update before this machine was ever sold. If the builder had flashed the board to the current BIOS before shipping it, this customer never would have had a problem.
Instead, the PC went out the door on old firmware, the customer got months of intermittent headaches, and it finally quit on him completely.
With the board in its stubborn state, I enabled Memory Context Restore and let the system work through a long boot attempt. About fifteen minutes in, the memory training completed and the issue corrected itself. Once I was back into Windows, I ran the BIOS update through MSI Center, brought the board fully current, and the problem was resolved for good. Stable POST, stable memory at rated speed, clean bill of health.
If there is one takeaway for anyone comparing a prebuilt against a custom build, it is this: check whether the seller updates the BIOS before shipping. Most volume builders do not, and on AM5 that single skipped step can turn into a dead system months later.
When you order a prebuilt online or grab one off a shelf, nobody is going to that level of detail on the finishing touches. The build gets assembled, it POSTs once, and it ships. That is the whole quality control process.
Every custom PC I build in my Somerville shop runs through a series of cross checks before it leaves the bench. I verify the BIOS is current against the manufacturer's release notes. I confirm every part is seated and installed correctly. I check that cables are managed and zip tied so nothing fouls a fan or blocks airflow. I test memory at its rated profile, not just at defaults. I will happily spend an hour reading up on the best component combinations before I order a single part, because I put my name behind every build.
Call it Tech OCD if you want. I do. It is also the reason my builds do not come back with the kind of problem this customer paid someone else to give him.
