You built the USB installer, booted the Dell, clicked through to the disk screen, and Windows setup shrugged at you: "We couldn't find any drives. To get a storage driver, click Load driver." Or the BIOS itself is telling you "No hard drive found" or "No bootable devices found." If you are staring at that on an Inspiron, XPS, Latitude, Vostro, or Precision, take a breath. On our Somerville NJ repair bench this is one of the most common Dell calls we get, and in the large majority of cases the drive is perfectly healthy. Windows just cannot see it yet. Dell's own support wiki lays out the official steps for the "no hard drive found" install issue. What follows is the same fix list in the order we actually run it, with the tech-side notes Dell leaves out and a clear line for when it stops being a settings problem and starts being a hardware one.
The short answer: Dell ships nearly every modern laptop with SATA/NVMe Operation set to RAID On, which routes the drive through Intel Rapid Storage Technology (and on 11th Gen Intel or newer, Intel VMD). A stock Windows installer has no driver for that, so it reports no drives. You either switch the BIOS to AHCI/NVMe and reboot, or you keep RAID On and load Dell's Intel RST/VMD driver from a second USB stick when setup asks. Ninety percent of these cases end there. The other ten percent are a wrongly built USB installer, BitLocker getting in the way, or a drive that has actually failed, and each of those has its own section below.
This is not a defect. Dell enables Intel Rapid Storage Technology by default so the factory image can use features like Optane caching and self-encrypting drive support. Starting with 11th Gen Intel processors (Tiger Lake and newer, which covers most Dells sold since 2021), the storage controller also runs through Intel Volume Management Device, or VMD. Windows 10 and Windows 11 install media from Microsoft does not include the VMD driver, so when the installer scans for storage it finds nothing and asks you to load one. The drive is there, spinning or flashing away; the installer simply has no way to talk to it. That is why the error reads "no hard drive found" or "we couldn't find any drives" rather than something that sounds like a hardware fault.
There are three other things that produce the same symptom and get mixed up with it. A USB installer partitioned for the wrong boot mode (MBR when the Dell is set to UEFI, or the reverse) will boot but fail to see the disk. BitLocker, which Dell now turns on automatically on many consumer machines, will lock you out of changing BIOS settings cleanly or throw a recovery key prompt at the worst moment. And occasionally the drive really is dead or unseated, which is the only version of this problem that needs a screwdriver instead of a keyboard.
1. Deal with BitLocker first. If the laptop still boots into its existing copy of Windows, go to Control Panel > BitLocker Drive Encryption and turn it off (or at least suspend it) before touching the BIOS. Changing the SATA mode or Secure Boot state on an encrypted drive triggers BitLocker recovery, and if you do not have the 48-digit key saved to your Microsoft account, the data on that drive is gone for good. If the machine will not boot at all, sign in to your Microsoft account on another device and copy the recovery key down before going further. We see a steady stream of Central New Jersey customers who skipped this step; it is the single easiest way to turn a free fix into a data recovery job.
2. Switch SATA Operation from RAID On to AHCI/NVMe. Restart and tap F2 as soon as the Dell logo appears to enter BIOS setup. On newer Dells look under Storage > SATA/NVMe Operation; on older ones it is System Configuration > SATA Operation. Change RAID On to AHCI/NVMe, apply, and exit. Boot the installer again and the drive should appear immediately. One warning worth reading twice: if you are doing a clean install this is harmless, but if you are trying to keep an existing Windows install and only poked into setup by accident, flipping this setting will make the current Windows refuse to boot with an INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE blue screen until you flip it back. 3. Or keep RAID On and load the Intel RST/VMD driver. Dell's preferred method, and the right call if you want to preserve the factory storage configuration. On any working computer, go to Dell Support, enter the Service Tag from the bottom of the laptop, and under Drivers look for Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver and Management Console (or the Intel VMD driver, depending on model). Download it, extract the package, and copy the folder containing the .inf files (usually named F6 or VMD) to a second USB stick. Back on the Dell, at the "we couldn't find any drives" screen, click Load driver, browse to that folder, pick the Intel RST VMD Controller entry, and the drive will populate the list. You will need the same driver again after installation finishes so Windows keeps talking to the controller properly.
4. Rebuild the USB installer for the right boot mode. If the drive still does not show, the installer itself is the suspect. Every Dell made in the last decade boots UEFI, so the stick needs a GPT partition scheme with a FAT32 boot partition. Microsoft's Media Creation Tool does this correctly on its own. If you used Rufus, set Partition scheme to GPT and Target system to UEFI (non CSM); MBR/BIOS builds will boot on some Dells and then fail to see the disk. Also confirm Boot Mode in BIOS is set to UEFI and, for Windows 11, that Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 are on. 5. Check whether the BIOS itself sees the drive. This is the step that separates a driver problem from a dead drive. In BIOS setup, look under System Information or Storage for the drive's model and capacity. If it is listed there, the drive is alive and everything above will work. If the BIOS shows nothing, power off, and on models with a removable bottom cover, reseat the M.2 SSD (one screw, pull it out at an angle, push it back in). Then tap F12 at boot and run Dell's built-in SupportAssist / ePSA diagnostics, which tests the drive at the hardware level and gives you an error code you can hand to Dell or to us.
6. Warranty or a local bench. If the diagnostics fail the drive and the laptop is under Dell warranty, call Dell; a replacement SSD is covered, though your data is not. If it is out of warranty, or you need the files that were on it, that is where a local shop earns its keep.
An SSD that does not appear in the BIOS after a reseat, or that fails ePSA, has usually reached the end of its life. NVMe drives in thin Dell laptops run hot, and we see plenty of them fail between years three and five, often right after the owner tried a Windows reinstall to fix "slowness" that was actually the drive dying. The good news is that replacing the drive is a fast, inexpensive repair: our SSD upgrade service in NJ installs a quality NVMe drive, sets the BIOS correctly, and puts a clean Windows 11 on it, usually in one to two days. If the old drive held photos, tax records, or work files that were never backed up, do not keep reinstalling on top of it. Stop, and bring it in. A failing SSD that has been powered on repeatedly gets harder to recover every time, and our New Jersey data recovery work has the best odds when the drive arrives untouched.

Why does my Dell say "no hard drive found" when installing Windows?

Should I use AHCI or RAID On for a Windows 11 clean install on a Dell?
Either works. AHCI/NVMe is simpler because the Windows installer sees the drive with no extra driver. RAID On is Dell's default and is required if you use Intel Optane memory or want the factory storage setup; you just have to load the Intel RST/VMD driver at the "we couldn't find any drives" screen. For a single SSD in a home or small business laptop, AHCI is the setting we use most.
Where do I get the Intel VMD driver for a Windows 11 install on a Dell?
From dell.com/support. Enter your Service Tag, open Drivers & Downloads, and look for Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) Driver. Extract it on another PC, copy the folder with the .inf files to a USB stick, and choose Load driver in Windows setup.
Will changing SATA Operation from RAID to AHCI erase my data?
No, the setting itself does not touch the data on the drive. It does change how Windows accesses the drive, so an existing Windows install will blue screen at boot until you switch the setting back or reinstall. And if BitLocker is on, changing BIOS settings will trigger a recovery key prompt, so turn BitLocker off or save the key first.
The BIOS does not list the drive at all. Is it dead?
Possibly. Reseat the M.2 SSD if your model allows it, then run Dell's ePSA diagnostics from the F12 boot menu. If the drive still does not appear, it has most likely failed. Do not keep trying to reinstall on it; bring it to a local shop for data recovery and a replacement SSD.
