External Hard Drive Recovery in NJ: When Your Backup Drive Fails

External drives carry a strange kind of risk. People trust them with the one copy of their photos, work files, and backups, and then the drive that was supposed to be the safety net is the thing that fails. If your external or portable drive has stopped working, here is what external hard drive recovery in NJ involves.

Drive not showing up right now? Stop re-plugging it to check — call 908-428-9558 and I'll tell you the next safe step. Free evaluation, no pressure.

I am David at Dave's Computers in Somerville. External and USB drive failures are some of the most common cases that come across my bench, partly because these drives get carried around, dropped, and unplugged at the wrong moment.

Why external drives fail so often

An external drive is usually a normal hard drive or SSD inside a plastic enclosure, connected through a small bridge board. That gives it extra ways to fail compared to an internal drive:

The encouraging part is that a meaningful share of external drive failures are enclosure problems, not drive problems. When that is the case, the data is intact and recovery is straightforward.

⚠️

Don't keep plugging it in to "check"

If an external drive clicks, powers on and off, or disappears and reappears, repeatedly reconnecting it can turn a recoverable drive into a dead one. Try a different cable and port once. If that does not work, stop and bring it in.

What we recover from

External hard drives, portable SSDs, USB flash drives, and SD and memory cards all come in regularly. The data on them, family photos, a dissertation, business records, the only copy of an old project, is usually what makes recovery worth it. We work with all of these in-house, Mac and Windows alike.

Logical failures, corruption, accidental deletion, a drive that is detected but not readable, are recovered in-house and generally run in the $199 to $599 range depending on complexity. If a spinning drive inside has a physical head or motor failure, that part needs a clean room, and in that case I refund you and refer you to a trusted partner. The broader approach lives on data recovery in New Jersey, and drive-specific detail on the hard drive recovery page.

External drive won't show up?

Bring it in with its cable. Often the drive inside is fine and only the enclosure failed. Free evaluation and a clear quote before any work.

Common questions

My external drive isn't recognized. Is the data gone?

Often not. A common cause is a failed enclosure or bridge board, where the drive inside is healthy and only the electronics died. That data is usually fully recoverable. Bring the drive and its cable in for an evaluation.

I dropped my portable drive and now it clicks. What now?

Clicking after a drop usually means physical head damage, which needs a clean room. Power it off immediately and do not keep trying to access it. Bring it in, and if it needs lab work you are refunded before any referral.

Can you recover USB flash drives and SD cards too?

Yes. USB flash drives, SD and microSD cards, and memory cards are regular recovery cases. They use flash memory, so the same advice applies: stop using the card and bring it in rather than running recovery software on it repeatedly.

It says the drive needs formatting. Should I let it?

No. That message usually means file system corruption, and formatting can make recovery harder. Disconnect the drive and have it imaged first. This is one of the more recoverable situations if you do not write to it.
