A customer came into the shop this week with an SD card that had simply stopped working. No warning, no error messages building up over time, no clicking or obvious signs of trouble. One day it held photos and files, the next day nothing would read it. The card was a Gigastone, and after putting it through our full data recovery process, the verdict was one we hate delivering: the data was unrecoverable.
This is not a one-off. We have been seeing a steady increase in failed SD cards and SSDs from budget brands that are heavily marketed on Amazon, and the pattern is always the same. The drive works fine until the moment it does not, and by then it is often too late.
Brands like Gigastone have flooded Amazon in recent years with storage priced well below the established manufacturers. On paper the specs look comparable. In practice, the difference shows up on the bench. Independent endurance testing backs up what we see in the shop: in one long-running microSD survey, Gigastone cards averaged far fewer read/write cycles before failure than cards from the major manufacturers.
Here is why the price gap exists. Flash storage is built from NAND memory chips, and those chips are graded at the factory. The best chips go to the manufacturers who make their own NAND, like Samsung, SanDisk, and Western Digital. Lower-grade and off-spec NAND gets sold on the open market, and that is frequently what ends up inside bargain-priced cards and drives. Pair lower-grade NAND with a basic controller and minimal quality testing, and you get storage that benchmarks fine out of the box but wears out or dies suddenly well ahead of schedule.
When a traditional spinning hard drive starts to fail, it usually gives you warnings. Slow file transfers, clicking sounds, files that take forever to open. Those symptoms buy you time to get the data off.
SD cards and SSDs are different. Because there are no moving parts, failure is often electronic and instant. The controller chip dies, the NAND develops uncorrectable errors, or the firmware corrupts, and the entire drive goes dark at once.

This is why we tell customers that flash storage recovery is never guaranteed. We recover data from failed drives and cards every week, but some failures, especially on low-quality hardware, leave nothing to work with.

These manufacturers either make their own NAND or have long track records of consistent quality control. You will pay a little more up front. That difference is nothing compared to the cost of a data recovery attempt, or worse, learning that your photos and files are gone for good.
Quality matters with storage more than almost any other component in your computer. A budget keyboard that fails is an inconvenience. A budget SSD that fails can take years of irreplaceable files with it.
Whatever storage you own right now, set up a backup before you do anything else. A second copy on an external drive, a cloud backup service, or ideally both. The customer with the failed Gigastone card did not lose their data because recovery failed. They lost it because there was only one copy in existence when the card died. No brand, at any price, is a substitute for a backup.
If a memory card or drive has stopped working, stop using it immediately. Continued read attempts and DIY recovery software can make a recoverable situation unrecoverable.
