Common symptoms, and what they mean
Clicking, beeping, or grinding Usually lab
This is the one to take seriously. A repetitive click or a soft beep usually means the read/write heads or motor are failing physically. Every second the drive runs in this state can cause more damage. Power it off immediately. This kind of failure almost always needs a clean room.
Drive not detected at all Often in-house
If the drive spins up quietly but does not show up, the cause can be a failed controller board, a logical fault, or a connection issue, many of which are recoverable in-house. If it is silent and shows nothing, it may be mechanical. The noise, or lack of it, is the tell.
Detected but not readable Often in-house
The drive appears but you cannot open it, or it asks to be formatted. This is usually file system corruption or a damaged partition table, and it is one of the more recoverable situations as long as you stop using the drive right away.
Deleted or reformatted by accident In-house
Emptied the recycle bin, reformatted the wrong drive, or lost a partition? On a healthy drive these are among the most recoverable cases, because the data is usually still physically there until something overwrites it.
Dropped or water damaged Depends
Physical trauma is unpredictable. Sometimes the drive survives and the failure is logical; sometimes heads or platters are damaged and it needs a lab. Do not power it on to test it. Let it be evaluated first.
The worst thing you can do is keep trying
Repeatedly powering a failing drive on and off, or running recovery software on it, is the most common way recoverable data becomes unrecoverable. If the drive is making noise or behaving strangely, stop and have it imaged before anything else.

Windows says my drive needs to be formatted. Should I?
