How Long Does Computer Repair Take? Honest Timelines by Job Type
When your computer is your work, your photos, and your evenings, "we'll call you when it's ready" is not an answer. So here is the question everyone asks at the counter, answered the way we answer it in person: how long does computer repair take, job by job, and what actually decides whether you get it back today or next week.
These are typical ranges from our bench in Somerville. Your machine gets a specific timeline at drop-off, once we know what we are dealing with.
Typical timelines, job by job
- Diagnostics: usually same or next business day. Most machines get properly diagnosed within a day of drop-off, faster when the symptom is reproducible. Intermittent problems can take longer, because a fault that appears once every few hours has to be caught in the act.
- Virus and malware cleanup: often same or next day. A thorough cleaning and verification pass, not just a quick scan. Heavily infected machines that need a careful rebuild around your files can stretch to a couple of days. The full picture is on our virus removal page.
- Storage upgrades and slow-machine fixes: usually about a day. Moving Windows and your files to a fast SSD is often a same-day or next-day job, depending on how much data has to move and how healthy the old drive is.
- Laptop screens and physical parts: one to four business days, driven by parts. If the panel or part is one we stock or can get locally, this moves fast. Rarer panels and brand-specific parts add shipping time, and that, not labor, is nearly always the wait. Details on our laptop screen repair page.
- Software rebuilds and stubborn Windows problems: one to three days. A clean, methodical reinstall that preserves your files, drivers done right, updates current, takes longer than wiping a machine carelessly, and it is the difference between fixed and fixed-for-a-week.
- Data recovery: days, not hours, on purpose. A failing drive has to be imaged slowly and gently, and rushing it risks the very files you are trying to save. Simple cases finish in a couple of days; a sick drive can take a week or more, and that patience is the treatment. Our data recovery page and cost guide explain why.
What actually moves the timeline
Three things, in practice. Parts availability is the big one: labor on a screen swap is measured in an hour or so, but a panel coming from a warehouse across the country sets the calendar. The second is how sick the machine is, because failing hardware has to be handled slowly to protect your data, and a repair that starts with rescuing files takes longer than one that does not. The third is honesty about queue position: a small shop that tells you "Thursday" and means it beats a big-box counter that takes your machine into a three-week fog. We wrote up how long Geek Squad repairs take separately if you want the comparison; the short version is that anything they cannot do in-store gets shipped out, and shipping eats calendars.
The one thing that speeds up every repair
Bring the details with the machine: your login password, the charger if it is a laptop, and a sentence or two about when the problem happens. Repairs stall most often not on parts but on waiting to reach the owner with a question. Good intake information can shave a day off all by itself.
When you genuinely can't wait
Some situations do not have a "next week" in them: the laptop with tomorrow's presentation on it, the machine a home business runs on. Say so at drop-off. When the problem is one we can turn around fast, we will, and for businesses that are losing money by the hour we offer same-day business repair as its own service. What we will not do is promise everyone same-day service as a marketing line and then quietly miss it; a timeline you can plan around is worth more than an optimistic one.
The whole process, from drop-off to pickup, is laid out on how it works, and everything we fix is covered on our computer repair page. Walk in with the machine, walk out with a diagnosis timeline; that part costs you nothing but the drive to Somerville.
