How to Change Your WiFi Channel, and Which Channel to Actually Pick

If your WiFi is slow in a way that comes and goes, especially evenings, and especially in a neighborhood or apartment where you can see a dozen other networks, there is a decent chance your router is sharing a channel with half the block. Changing the WiFi channel costs nothing, takes about five minutes, and is one of the few router tweaks that produces a difference you can feel. Here is how to do it right.

Step one: get into your router

1. On a device connected to your network, open a browser and enter your router's address. The most common are 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, or the address printed on the router's label. (To find it on Windows: run ipconfig in a terminal and use the Default Gateway address.)
2. Sign in with the admin credentials, which are on the router's label unless you changed them. If your internet provider's app manages the router (Xfinity, Verizon, and most mesh systems), the channel setting lives in that app instead, usually under advanced WiFi settings.
3. Find the wireless settings. The channel option is usually under Wireless, WiFi, or Advanced → Wireless.

Step two: pick the right channel

The rules differ by band, and this is where most guides go wrong:

• 2.4 GHz band: use channel 1, 6, or 11. Only those three. The 2.4 GHz band has eleven channels in the US, but they overlap; 1, 6, and 11 are the only three that do not interfere with each other. Picking channel 3 or 9 because it looks empty actually collides with two of the clean channels at once. Choose whichever of 1, 6, or 11 is least used around you.
• 5 GHz band: channels do not overlap, so any quiet one works. Channels 36–48 are the common low band. The higher DFS channels (52–144) are often emptiest, but some routers pause on them occasionally to check for radar, so if you see brief dropouts after choosing one, move back to the standard set.
• Auto is fine, until it isn't. Most routers default to auto channel selection, and modern ones do it reasonably well. The case for a manual channel is when auto keeps landing you on a congested one, which you can verify with a free WiFi analyzer app on your phone: it shows every nearby network and the channel each occupies. Pick the gap.

Save, let the router restart its radios, and give it a real test at the times your WiFi normally struggles. That before/after at 8 PM is the only benchmark that matters.
