Inside a Real PC Diagnostic: What We Actually Check Before Quoting You
"Diagnostic" might be the most stretched word in this industry. At some places it means a technician boots your machine, pokes at it for five minutes, and quotes you for whatever seems most likely. Then the "fix" doesn't hold, because the visible symptom and the actual fault were two different things.
A real computer diagnostic is a process, not a glance. Since intermittent problems are the ones that drive people crazy, and since a wrong diagnosis means paying twice, here is exactly what happens when a misbehaving PC lands on our bench in Somerville.
Why the five-minute look-over fails
Computers fail in layers. A machine that freezes could be failing storage, bad RAM, an overheating CPU, a sagging power supply, a corrupt driver, or malware, and several of those produce identical symptoms. Worse, the most expensive misdiagnoses come from fixing the loudest symptom: replacing a "slow" drive when the real problem is thermal throttling, or reinstalling Windows on top of a failing SSD, which turns a repair into a data recovery case. The only defense is checking the layers in order, and ruling things out rather than guessing things in.
The checklist, in the order we run it
- Your story first. When it happens, what changed recently, what has already been tried. Half of diagnosis is knowing that the freezing started after a Windows update, or only happens in games, or began the week the machine moved rooms. This is why we ask questions at drop-off instead of just taking the tower.
- Storage health before anything else. The drive gets checked at the hardware level for reallocated and pending sectors and error history. This comes first for one reason: if the drive is dying, every additional test risks your files, so a failing drive changes the entire plan on the spot.
- Power delivery. The power supply gets tested for stable voltages under load, not just at idle, and we check the motherboard for the visible tells like bulging capacitors. Unstable power mimics half the other failures on this list and is the most commonly missed fault in quick look-overs.
- Memory, properly. A real RAM test takes hours of full passes, not a two-minute scan. Marginal memory is the classic cause of the random blue screen that never shows the same error twice.
- Thermals under real load. We log CPU and GPU temperatures while the machine actually works, and check whether coolers are mounted right, fans spin up, and airflow makes sense. A computer that only misbehaves after twenty minutes has a heat story to tell, and idle testing never hears it.
- The software layer. Event logs read for the crash trail, drivers and firmware checked against what the hardware needs, startup load reviewed, and a malware check, because an infection can impersonate nearly any hardware problem.
- Findings and a real quote. You get told what we found, what it costs to fix, and whether it is worth fixing on this machine, before any repair work starts. If the honest answer is that the money belongs in a replacement instead, you will hear that too.
The one check worth doing before you bring it in
Note exactly what the machine was doing each time it failed: the app, the time running, the error text if any, even a phone photo of the screen. A pattern you noticed is worth more to a diagnostic than an hour of testing, and it is completely safe to collect.
What you walk away with
The output of a proper diagnostic is not a shrug and an invoice. It is a specific answer: this part is failing, this is the evidence, here is the fix and the price, and here is what we would do if it were our machine. Sometimes that answer is a repair. Sometimes it is "the hardware is fine, the software needs a rebuild." And sometimes it is "this machine owes you nothing, put the money toward its replacement and we will move your data over." All three are wins, because all three beat paying to fix the wrong thing.
