For twenty years the answer was automatic: building your own PC saved money. In 2026 that is no longer a safe assumption. Memory and storage prices have roughly tripled since late 2025, big prebuilt makers buy those parts by the container, and a well-publicized price comparison this spring found the DIY cart came out more expensive than the boxed machine. We build custom PCs for a living at our Somerville shop, so we have every reason to tell you building wins. Instead, here is the honest math with the sources attached, covering all three paths: do it yourself, buy a prebuilt, or have a local shop build it.
On sticker price, building yourself is no longer reliably cheaper than a prebuilt in 2026. In a March 2026 comparison, SlashGear priced a $1,400 CyberPowerPC prebuilt against the equivalent components bought individually on Amazon and got $1,478 for the DIY version. The reason is simple: prebuilt makers negotiate bulk pricing on memory and storage and hold inventory bought before the surge, while an individual builder pays this week's retail price on every part.
On value, building (or having a shop build) still wins, because you control exactly which power supply, memory configuration, SSD, and cooling go in the box. Those are precisely the parts that prebuilt makers cut to hit a price, as we documented in our budget gaming PC teardown. The question in 2026 is not "which is cheaper" but "which gets me the best machine for the money I actually have."

Four things have shifted this year that change the old advice.
The bulk-buying advantage is real but it is concentrated in the two parts that spiked: RAM and SSD. On graphics cards the gap is small. Tom's Hardware's July 2026 best GPUs guide notes that outside the RTX 5090, "graphics card prices haven't risen much more than they already did earlier this year." So a prebuilt's discount is mostly a discount on a $394 memory kit, and some makers claw it back by shipping one stick instead of two.
If your current PC has a good NVMe drive or a 32GB kit, that hardware is now worth two to three times what you paid. Carrying a $0 drive and $0 memory into a new build erases the prebuilt's bulk-buying edge instantly. This is the single biggest lever we use in the shop this year, and it only exists on the build paths.
A first-time build takes four to eight hours when everything works. When it does not, you are troubleshooting a machine that will not POST, with a $394 memory kit and a $659 graphics card as suspects. In 2024 a dead stick of RAM was a $40 annoyance. In 2026 it is a $200 stick, a restocking-fee debate, and a week without a computer. That is the part of "is building a PC hard?" that the tutorials skip.
When we build for a customer, the parts are itemized, the power supply has a name and a certification, the memory is two sticks, and the drive has a DRAM cache. That is the DIY quality advantage. The labor is a flat quote, the Windows license is included, and if a part is bad we find out on our bench, not in your living room. That is the prebuilt convenience advantage. What you give up is the bulk-buying discount, which we offset by reusing your parts and sizing memory and storage to the job.
