Is Your Computer Worth Repairing? The Honest Math From a New Jersey Repair Bench

I've run a computer repair service in New Jersey since 2011, and at least once a week I talk someone out of a repair. That surprises people — the guy who gets paid to fix computers telling you not to fix yours — but it's exactly why customers come back with the machines that are worth fixing. Here's the actual math I run at the bench, so you can run it yourself before spending a dime.

Start with the 50% rule — then adjust it

The classic rule says: if the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable replacement, replace it. It's a decent starting point and a terrible finish line, because it ignores three things — what the machine originally was, what specifically failed, and what's stored on it.

What broke matters more than how old it is

Some failures are contained: replace the part and the computer is whole again. Others are symptoms of a machine that's dying. Learning to tell them apart is most of the decision.

Almost always worth repairing:

• Cracked screens. Contained, predictable, and usually a few hundred dollars on a laptop worth three times that. I broke down the full pricing in yesterday's post on cracked screens and replacement costs, and a good laptop screen repair service can have most models turned around fast.
• Slow machines and aging hard drives. An SSD swap plus a fresh Windows install is the best dollar-for-dollar upgrade in computing. A seven-year-old machine with an SSD routinely outruns a brand-new budget laptop.
• Batteries, keyboards, fans, and charging ports. These are wear items. Replacing a wear item on an otherwise healthy machine is maintenance, not a rescue.
• Virus and malware cleanup. A software problem on healthy hardware. Cleaning it costs a fraction of replacement and you keep everything exactly as you had it.

Think hard before repairing:

• Motherboard failures on older consumer laptops. Often the most expensive part in the machine, and on a six-plus-year-old budget laptop the board can cost more than the laptop's value.
• Liquid damage that sat for weeks. Corrosion keeps working after the spill dries. A cleaned board can still develop new faults months later, so I'm honest about the odds before you commit money.
• Major failures on bottom-tier machines. If it was a $329 laptop four years ago, almost any major hardware repair fails the math. (Quality desktops are the exception — they're modular, and swapping one component often makes sense for years.)

The quality gap nobody prices in

Here's the trap hiding inside "just buy a new one": a $400 replacement laptop is usually a worse computer than your $1,100 laptop from 2021. Thinner build quality, dimmer screen, slower storage, a worse keyboard. When I compare repair against replacement, I compare against a machine of equal quality — and once you price that honestly, a $300 repair on a well-built machine wins far more often than the sticker on a doorbuster suggests.

Your data changes the math entirely

A computer that isn't worth repairing may still be holding files worth everything — the tax records, the QuickBooks file, twelve years of family photos. Those are two separate decisions. Even when the machine itself goes to recycling, the drive's contents don't have to go with it. Getting files off a dead machine is usually straightforward; if the drive itself failed, that's a recovery conversation, and it's still very often solvable.

The quick reference I give at the counter

• Under 4 years old: repair almost anything except a dead motherboard on a budget model.
• 4–6 years old: repair contained failures (screen, battery, drive, port); think twice on boards and liquid damage.
• 7+ years old: repair only cheap wear items or upgrades that extend life on a quality machine; otherwise migrate your data and retire it with dignity.

Diagnosis comes first, and I quote before any work happens. If replacement is the smarter move, I'll say so and tell you exactly what to buy instead — and what to move over from the old machine.
