Your computer still does everything you need. You just wish it looked different, took up less space, or had room for your next upgrade. A PC case swap might be the answer: the motherboard, processor, graphics card, memory and drives can usually move into a new enclosure while you keep the computer you already like. The part to slow down for is the word "just." Moving a PC into a new case means taking much of the system apart and assembling it again, and whether that is straightforward depends on the parts you own and the case you choose. Here is what to check before you buy one, and when it makes sense to have a shop do the transfer.
Different reasons for a swap lead to different case choices.
You find a case you love, look over at the computer on your desk, and start wondering: could all of that hardware just move into this one?
Often, yes. A custom PC's case can be replaced while keeping the motherboard, processor, graphics card, memory, and drives. If those parts still meet your needs, changing the enclosure can give the computer a different look without paying for an entirely new build.
Maybe the huge tower made sense under your old desk, but it is awkward in your new room. Maybe you want a glass side panel and a cleaner interior. Or perhaps the graphics card you want to install is longer than your current case allows.
Those are different reasons for a swap, and they lead to different choices. A case chosen mainly for its appearance still has to fit the existing hardware. A smaller enclosure may require compromises. A case chosen for a future upgrade needs to accommodate that new component as well as everything you are keeping.
There is nothing wrong with changing the case because you like another one better. The useful question is whether the result is worth the case, the labor, and any extra parts needed to make the move work.
Case listings make compatibility sound simple. In practice, parts share space, and a clearance figure may change once fans or a radiator are installed.
Match the motherboard size, check the graphics card length, and you are done. That is how the listing reads. Before buying, look at the complete combination instead:
The card needs room for its length and thickness, plus its power connection. A card fitting inside the case is not the same as the side panel closing comfortably over the connected cable.
A tall air cooler needs enough side-panel clearance. An all-in-one liquid cooler needs suitable radiator mounts and room around the motherboard, memory, and other components.
A smaller case may need a different power supply size or offer fewer drive mounts. The new case's front USB ports also need compatible connections on the motherboard.

A photo of the outside and the brand name are not enough to decide.
If your computer came from a manufacturer as a complete system, check the exact model before ordering an enclosure. Some prebuilts use standard components that transfer readily. Others use unusual motherboard shapes, power connections, or front-panel arrangements.
That can turn an apparent case-only project into a job that needs additional hardware. It does not mean every prebuilt is unsuitable; it means the model number matters more than the brand.
Your files and installed software live on the drives, not in the enclosure.
A case-only swap normally keeps the same motherboard and storage drives. In that situation, reinstalling Windows is usually unnecessary: everything you have installed comes along with the drives.
If the project expands to include a new motherboard or a replacement system drive, discuss that separately. Those changes can introduce setup and migration work that a simple case transfer would not. Microsoft treats a motherboard replacement as a significant hardware change, so Windows may ask to be reactivated after that kind of upgrade, which a case-only swap does not trigger.
Owning a custom PC does not mean you have to enjoy building one.
If you enjoy building PCs and are comfortable dismantling your current machine, a case swap can be a satisfying project. You already know the parts work together; the task is moving them carefully into a different layout.
Paying a shop is reasonable when you would rather hand over a working computer and get it back assembled, connected, and tested.
The work includes more than moving the large components. Motherboard mounting, front-panel connectors, fan wiring, and cable routing all need attention. A computer that starts successfully still needs its cooling and stability checked after the move.
When asking for a price, describe the whole project. An air-cooled tower and a custom water-cooled build should not be treated as the same job. Mention:

A different cooler, more fans, a new graphics card, then a bigger power supply. Some of those changes may be useful. Others may simply be tempting because the side panel is already off.
Write down the reason you wanted the new case in the first place. If it was appearance, keep the budget centered on that. If it was clearance for an upgrade, check that upgrade as part of the plan. If it was noise or heat, find the cause before assuming a new enclosure will fix it.
A well-planned swap can leave you with the computer you still like in a case that suits you better. The best time to work through the details is before the new case arrives.
