Let me explain what is going on when an array goes down. Why RAID recovery is different

A single drive holds your files in one place. A RAID spreads them across several drives using a specific pattern, called the array geometry, plus parity information that lets it survive a failure. When a RAID fails, recovering the data is not just about reading drives, it is about correctly rebuilding that pattern first. Get the geometry wrong and the files stay scrambled.

That is why running consumer recovery software at a broken array usually does not work, and can make things worse. RAID recovery is a rebuild problem before it is a read problem.

What failure looks like by RAID level

RAID 0
No redundancy. One failed drive takes the whole array down. Recovery means reading every surviving member and reconstructing the stripe. The riskiest level, and a common recovery case.
RAID 1
Mirrored drives. If one fails, the other usually still holds a full copy, which often makes recovery more straightforward, as long as the surviving drive is healthy.
RAID 5
Survives one drive failure on paper. The danger is a second drive failing during a rebuild, which is far more common than people expect. Recovery means rebuilding parity across the members.
RAID 6
Survives two drive failures, but often fails after a botched rebuild or controller issue. Recovery rebuilds the dual-parity layout from the surviving drives.
RAID 10
Mirrored and striped. Resilient, but a failure of the wrong combination of drives can still bring it down. Recovery reconstructs both the mirror and the stripe.

Do not rebuild a degraded array

The most damaging mistake with a failing RAID is forcing a rebuild or swapping in a new drive and letting it resync. That can overwrite the very data you are trying to recover. If the array has dropped members, power it down, label the drive order, and have it evaluated first.

In-house rebuild vs. lab work

If the member drives are physically healthy and the failure is logical, a controller problem, a configuration loss, a failed rebuild, the array can usually be reconstructed and recovered in-house. That covers a large share of RAID failures.

If one or more member drives have a physical failure, like a head crash, those specific drives may need a clean room before the array can be rebuilt. In that case I am upfront about it, refund the in-house portion, and coordinate with a trusted lab partner. Common questions

One drive in my RAID 5 failed. Am I safe?

For now the array is degraded but running. The real risk is a second drive failing during a rebuild. Back up immediately if you still can, and do not force a rebuild without a backup. If a second drive has already gone, stop and have the array evaluated.

Do you recover NAS devices too?

Yes. NAS units from brands like Synology, QNAP, and Western Digital use RAID underneath, and we recover from them regularly. Bring the whole unit and the drives, and keep the drive order intact if you have removed them.

Can you recover a RAID 0 if one drive died?

It depends on the state of the failed drive. RAID 0 has no redundancy, so every member is needed. If the failed drive is logically recoverable, the stripe can often be reconstructed. If that drive has a physical failure, it may need a clean room first.
