You plugged in a second monitor, Windows shrugged, and now you're squinting at one screen wondering if the new monitor is broken. Probably not — "second monitor not detected" is usually a settings, cable, or adapter problem, and the fix order below sorts most of them out in under fifteen minutes.
I set up dual-monitor rigs for home offices and businesses all over Somerset County, and the same handful of culprits show up every time. Here they are, easiest first.
Right-click the desktop > Display settings. On Windows 11, expand Multiple displays and click Detect. On Windows 10 the Detect button sits right on the Display page. Older monitors especially — anything connected by VGA or through cheap adapters — sometimes need this manual shove because they don't introduce themselves properly.
While you're in there: if the second monitor shows up but stays black, check that it isn't set to a refresh rate or resolution it can't handle. Settings > Display > Advanced display, and drop the refresh rate to 60Hz as a test.
If the hardware checks pass and Windows still won't see the monitor, the display driver is next.
This section solves more stubborn cases than any other, because the problem often isn't the monitor or the laptop — it's the thing between them.
USB-C ports aren't all equal. A USB-C to HDMI adapter only works in a port that supports video output (DisplayPort Alt Mode). Many laptops have one USB-C port that does video and another that's charge/data only, with nothing printed to tell you which. Try the other port before you blame anything else.
Cheap hubs overpromise. Bargain multi-port hubs list "HDMI" but flake under load, drop to 30Hz, or die young. If the monitor flickers in and out of detection, suspect the hub first.
Passive adapters have rules. DVI/VGA conversions and older adapters care about direction and signal type. If you're chaining adapter-to-adapter, that chain is the suspect.
Docking stations need their own drivers. DisplayLink-based docks (common in offices) need their software installed — without it, the dock's monitor ports simply don't exist as far as Windows is concerned.
Count your laptop's video-capable outputs first: the HDMI port is one, a USB-C port with video support is two. Two external monitors on one laptop generally means one on HDMI plus one on USB-C, or a proper docking station carrying both. Then set roles in Settings > Display: drag the monitor icons to match how they sit on your desk, pick which is the main display, and set each to Extend. If you want the laptop closed while docked: Control Panel > Power Options > "Choose what closing the lid does" > set to "Do nothing" while plugged in — that's the setting everyone hunts for.

Almost always a driver update (roll it back), a cable that crept loose, or a hub acting up. The 60-second checks find it fast — and if it vanishes specifically after sleep, that's a known handshake quirk: power-cycling the monitor usually brings it back, and updating the graphics driver reduces how often it happens.
That's the projection mode, not a fault — Windows key + P, choose Extend.
You've likely hit your graphics hardware's output limit or a bandwidth ceiling on the dock. Integrated graphics on many laptops top out at two external displays, and budget docks split one video stream thin.
Sure — test it on anything else with HDMI (console, streaming stick, another PC). If it's dead everywhere, it's the monitor. If cleaning it up revealed lines, spots, or a cracked panel along the way, our guide to black lines on screens explains what's fixable.
Bring the laptop (or tower) in if no port will drive a second display it used to drive, if monitors flicker in and out of detection no matter the cable, or if you suspect the video output itself has failed — a failing GPU or a damaged port gets confirmed on our bench with known-good monitors and cables in minutes.
