What Affects a Virus Removal Quote
Four things, and a good shop can tell you where you land after a diagnostic.
Diagnosis
Somebody has to figure out whether it's malware at all, or a full drive, a failing drive or a browser permission problem. Some shops charge a separate diagnostic fee, some fold it into the repair, some do it free and make it up elsewhere. Ask which.
Infection severity
Adware and a hijacked browser take less bench time than a rootkit that hides from scans or a machine with three separate infections layered over a year. Hourly shops charge more for the second kind; flat-rate shops absorb it.
Operating system damage
Some infections break Windows badly enough that a reinstall is the honest fix. That's a separate job with its own price, and it should be quoted before it happens, not discovered on the invoice.
Additional data work
If files were deleted, corrupted or encrypted, recovering them is data recovery, not virus removal. Some national services exclude it entirely and hand you back a clean machine with empty folders. Ask up front.
What to Ask Any Shop Before You Say Yes
Five questions. The answers tell you more than the price does.
- Is there a diagnostic fee, and does it come off the repair? A fee that's credited toward the work is fair. A fee on top of the work, or a “free” diagnostic that leads to a surprise quote, is worth a second look.
- What's included in the cleanup? Removing the active infection is the minimum. Browser reset, startup and scheduled-task cleanup, security update verification and a password walkthrough are what stop it from coming back.
- How do you verify it's clean? “The scan came back clear” isn't enough; the scan that missed it the first time will miss it again. Ask whether they scan offline, outside Windows.
- What's the turnaround, and what does rush cost? Mail-in services often run two to three weeks. A local shop should be able to give you a range and tell you what same-day costs, if it's available.
- What would cost extra? A Windows reinstall, data recovery, a failing drive. The answer should be “we'll quote it before we do it,” not a shrug.
