Memory is the part of a 2026 build that has changed the most and confused people the most. DDR5 prices tripled in a few months, DDR4 is still on shelves, and every forum has a different opinion on speed, capacity and how many sticks to buy. We build and upgrade PCs every day at our Somerville shop, so here is the DDR4 vs DDR5 decision the way we actually make it at the bench: what the two generations change, what the price gap looks like this month, what independent testing says about speed and capacity, and the exact kits we put in builds.
The generation jump is more than a speed bump. Kingston's DDR5 overview lays out the hardware differences; here is what they mean for a build.

Tom's Hardware's tracker describes DDR5 pricing as having "exploded over the last trimester, with triple and, in some cases, quadruple increases," while DDR4 has climbed too, just less steeply. We covered the reasons in our post on why RAM and SSD prices are so high in 2026: memory makers are steering production toward AI data centers, and desktop buyers are paying for it.
Two things keep that gap in perspective. First, the tracker itself notes that it makes "little sense to build a DDR4-based system now due to processor and motherboard availability." The CPUs worth buying new in 2026 are DDR5 parts, so the DDR4 saving only exists if you also accept an older CPU platform with no upgrade path. Second, on a $1,500 build the $225 difference is real, but it buys a faster platform you will keep for four or five years. On an $800 build it can be the difference between a graphics card tier, which is why our budget AM4 builds still exist. Our 2026 build cost guide shows both paths priced out.
More than most people expect on the DDR4 vs DDR5 question, and less than the marketing suggests once you are already on DDR5.
The cleanest comparison is Intel's LGA1700 socket, because it has boards for both memory types. Tom's Hardware re-tested that platform in July 2026 across 15 games and found DDR4 "performance drops of 14% on average, and up to 25% in some games" compared with DDR5 on the same processor. That is the gap you accept when you choose a DDR4 board to save money: roughly one graphics card tier's worth of performance in CPU-limited titles.
AMD said so itself when the platform launched: DDR5-6000 running with the memory controller in a 1:1 ratio is the best balance for Ryzen chips, and that guidance still holds for Ryzen 9000 and the X3D parts. Kits rated above that often force the memory controller out of its 1:1 mode, which can give you a bigger number on the box and lower real performance. We spec DDR5-6000 with tight timings (CL30 when the budget allows) on every AM5 gaming build for that reason.
Intel's Core Ultra 200S chips will run faster kits than Ryzen without the ratio penalty, and a DDR5-6400 or 7200 kit is a reasonable choice if the price is close. Above that the kits get expensive fast and the gains in games get small. Tom's Hardware's best RAM roundup for 2026 leans the same way: buy a well-binned mid-speed kit from a known brand, not the highest number you can find.
Capacity is the question we get more than speed. The testing is clear, and the answer depends on what the PC is for.

Dual channel is the part of this decision people skip when they buy a single 32 GB stick "to upgrade later."
Every desktop CPU worth building on has a dual-channel memory controller. Fill only one slot and you run single channel, which halves the available bandwidth. Tom's Hardware measured what that costs in July 2026: most CPUs lose about 8 to 10% in games on a single DDR5 stick, while AMD's 3D V-Cache chips barely notice, with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D dropping under 3%. The same test found that even a single DDR5 stick still outperforms a dual-channel DDR4 setup, which is one more point for DDR5 on a new build.
Our rule at the bench is simple: buy memory in matched pairs, and buy the pair from the motherboard's memory support list. Two sticks also keeps the memory controller happy on AM5, where four populated slots usually mean lower rated speeds and longer boot-time memory training. If you think you will want 64 GB later, buy 2 x 32 GB now rather than 4 x 16 GB.

For a new build, yes, because every current CPU platform (AMD AM5 and Intel LGA1851) requires DDR5. On the one socket that supports both, Intel's LGA1700, Tom's Hardware measured DDR4 running about 14% slower on average in games and up to 25% slower in some titles. DDR4 only makes sense when you are upgrading a PC that already uses it or building the cheapest possible box on an older platform.

DDR5-6000 with the memory controller in its 1:1 mode, which AMD has described as the sweet spot for Ryzen on AM5. Faster kits often force the controller out of 1:1 and perform worse in practice. Buy a two-stick kit from the motherboard's support list and enable the EXPO profile in the BIOS.
It runs most games today, but TechSpot's testing across more than 30 titles found 32 GB is the sweet spot once you add a browser, Discord and a launcher. With 32 GB DDR5 kits around $400 this month, we often ship budget builds with 16 GB in two sticks and two empty slots, then upgrade later. 64 GB is unnecessary for gaming alone.
Two sticks. A single stick runs in single-channel mode, and Tom's Hardware measured an 8 to 10% loss in games on most CPUs (under 3% on the 9800X3D). Two sticks also keeps AM5 boards at their rated speed; four populated slots usually mean lower speeds and slow boot-time memory training.
DDR4 and DDR5 use different slots and cannot be mixed at all. Adding a second DDR5 kit to an existing one is possible but not guaranteed to run at rated speed, and mismatched kits are one of the most common causes of the boot and crash problems we see.
