Google Nest Cam vs UniFi G6 Turret: Our NJ Shop Camera Upgrade

We finally did it. Comparing the Google Nest Cam vs UniFi G6 Turret had been on our to-do list for months — we had a few older Nest Cams laying around the shop, still working, still faithfully pinging our phones every time a delivery driver walked by. But here at Dave's we practice what we preach: keep your tech up to date. So we unboxed a fresh Ubiquiti UniFi G6 Turret, plugged it into our Cloud Key NVR, and put the two head-to-head.

The Old Guard: Google Nest Cam

Our trusty Nest Cam, officially entering retirement.

Let's be fair to the little guy: the Nest Cam is a great consumer camera. Setup takes five minutes, the magnetic mount is slick, and it plays nicely with Google Home. For a lot of homes, it's all you need. But it tops out at 1080p, everything lives in Google's cloud, and the features you actually want — longer video history, smarter alerts — sit behind a monthly Nest Aware subscription. Those monthly fees never stop adding up.

The New Hire: Ubiquiti UniFi G6 Turret

The new arrival: G6 Turret in white. Even the box is classy.

The G6 Turret is a different animal. It's a 4K (8MP) PoE camera with a large 1/1.8" sensor, IP66 weatherproofing, and on-device AI that can tell the difference between a person, a vehicle, an animal, a face — even a license plate. One Ethernet cable handles power and data, and every frame records locally to our UniFi Cloud Key NVR. No cloud dependency. No monthly fee. The footage is ours.

And the picture quality? Amazing. The first time we pulled up the live view, we could read text across the room that the old Nest Cam rendered as a fuzzy suggestion.

The Fun Part: AI + OBS = Custom Detection Magic

Because the G6 Turret's feed is fully local, we can do things a cloud camera would never allow. We're piping the stream through OBS and layering AI on top to enhance detections and build a completely custom monitoring solution for the shop. Custom alert zones, smarter event filtering, our rules — not a subscription tier's rules. This is the kind of tinkering that keeps us excited about tech after all these years.

Should You Upgrade Your Cameras Too?

If your Nest, Ring, or no-name Wi-Fi cameras are getting fuzzy, eating batteries, or nickel-and-diming you with subscription fees, a UniFi setup is a serious upgrade — and it's more affordable than most people think. We design and install these systems for homes and businesses all over New Jersey, and they pair beautifully with the rest of a well-run network. Curious what that looks like? Stop by Dave's Computers in Hillsborough and we'll show you the G6 Turret footage in person. Fair warning: once you see 4K, you can't unsee 1080p.
