Is It Cheaper to Build Your Own PC in 2026? The Honest Answer Changed

For most of the twenty-plus years I've been doing this, the answer was automatic: yes, building your own PC saves money over buying one. In 2026, I have to give you a different answer, and I'd rather be straight about it than repeat advice that stopped being true. GPUs took a smaller but real hit: TechSpot's ten-region pricing study found RTX 50-series street prices up an average of 19% in three months — in November 2025, $1,000 bought an RTX 5080; by February it bought an RTX 5070 Ti.

Why prebuilts can now undercut your parts list

Here's the part that flipped the answer. Dell, HP, and Lenovo buy memory on long-term contracts negotiated before the spike, so their input costs lag the spot market you and I buy from. They've announced system price increases of 15–20% — real money — but when a retail DDR5 kit alone has tripled, a 15–20% bump on the whole box can still land below the sum of today's retail parts.
