You press the power button and get nothing. Or a light blinks and the screen stays dark. Before you assume the laptop is dead — and before you buy a new one — know this: a good share of the "dead" laptops that come across my Somerville bench turn on the same day. The trick is checking things in the right order, because "won't turn on" is really three different problems wearing one costume.
Work through the universal steps first. Then jump to your brand, because Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Acer each hide their own reset tricks.
No lights, no sounds, nothing. That's a power problem — charger, battery, power jack, or motherboard.
Lights on, maybe fan noise, but a black screen. That's usually a display or startup problem, not a power problem — different fix path, covered in our guide to a laptop that turns on but the screen stays black.
It starts, then shuts off within seconds. That points to overheating protection or a hardware fault — note how far it gets before dying.
Dells are chatty about failures — use it. After the power drain, watch the power/battery LED when you press the button: Dell uses amber-and-white blink patterns as diagnostic codes, and the pattern maps to a specific fault (memory, board, battery). If the machine powers up at all, tap F12 at the Dell logo and run the built-in SupportAssist diagnostics before Windows loads. On many models a firmware-level battery check also lives in the BIOS (F2). If it stays fully dead after a drain and a known-good charger, it's usually the power jack, DC-in board, or motherboard — bench territory. Details on our Dell laptop repair service here.
HP's version of the power drain is the same 30–60 second hold, and their blink codes live in the Caps Lock LED — count the blinks between pauses. One HP-specific trick worth knowing: if the machine died during or right after a BIOS update, hold Windows key + B while pressing power for a few seconds — many HPs keep a backup BIOS and this triggers recovery from it. Look for a tiny pinhole on the bottom of the case or next to a port — that's the emergency reset hole on many ThinkPads and IdeaPads. Unplug the charger, press a straightened paperclip in for about 10 seconds, then plug in and try again. It disconnects the internal battery, which is the same power drain trick for machines whose batteries are sealed inside. Many Lenovos also have a Novo button (a small button or pinhole near the power button or on the side) that boots straight into a recovery menu — useful when the machine powers on but Windows never appears. Acers get the same treatment, with their own pinhole: many Aspire and Swift models have a battery reset pinhole on the underside. Charger unplugged, paperclip in for 4–10 seconds, then plug the charger back in and give it a couple of minutes before powering on. Acer machines are also notorious for cheap third-party replacement chargers causing no-power symptoms — if yours died after a charger swap, that's suspect number one. Desktop or custom build that won't start: the checklist is different — front-panel connectors, PSU, RAM seating — and we wrote it up in how to fix a custom-built PC that won't turn on. That's the "lights but no display" branch — the laptop may be running with a dead screen or failed startup. Try the flashlight test and an external monitor before anything else. If HDMI shows a picture, it's the screen or backlight, not the motherboard.
A blinking charge LED usually signals a battery or power-delivery fault, and the blink pattern is brand-specific code. A battery that no longer holds or accepts charge can prevent startup entirely — that's a battery replacement, one of the quicker fixes we do.
Classic overheating cutoff or a short. If the fan vents are caked with dust, that's a strong lead — but repeated on-off cycling can also be a board fault, so don't keep force-cycling it dozens of times.
No — stop pressing the power button. Every attempt pushes current through wet circuitry. Unplug it, don't charge it, and get it opened and cleaned quickly. Liquid damage is time-sensitive, and the data is usually recoverable if you act fast.
Bring it in if the power drain and a known-good charger changed nothing, if you're seeing blink codes, if it shuts off seconds after starting, or if there's data on it you can't afford to lose.
