You click once, the computer hears twice. Files open when you meant to select them, folders fly open in pairs, drag-and-drop drops things mid-drag. A mouse that double-clicks on its own sounds like a haunted-house problem, but it's usually one very mundane thing: a tiny switch inside the mouse wearing out and electrically "bouncing." The good news — a few minutes of checks will tell you whether the fix is free, cheap, or a reason to finally retire that mouse.
Inside each mouse button is a mechanical micro-switch rated for millions of clicks. As the metal contact inside ages, one physical press can register as two or three rapid electrical contacts — the computer faithfully reports what it heard: click-click. Heavy-use mice (gaming, all-day office work) get there faster, and a few popular models are famous for developing exactly this fault. But before you convict the switch, rule out the three impostors: settings, battery, and the computer itself.
Honest answer from a repair shop: for a $15–$40 mouse, replace it — a switch replacement involves opening the shell and soldering a new micro-switch onto the board, and the labor math doesn't favor a budget mouse. Where repair gets interesting is the other end of the market: an $80–$180 gaming or ergonomic mouse with a worn main switch is absolutely worth saving, and it's a bench job we take — along with the keyboards, which fail in their own creative ways (see what to do when your keyboard stops working and fixing a stuck key).
One buying note while you're deciding: mice with optical switches (light-based instead of metal-contact) can't develop this particular fault — worth considering if you've now buried two mice with double-click disease.
That's the signature of a worn switch, not an argument against it — contact bounce is intermittent by nature, worse with faster or firmer clicks, and it degrades gradually. Intermittent today is constant in a month or two.
Settings can only fix setting problems (the two in step 1 and 2 above). No slider can cure a physically bouncing switch — anything that claims to is masking it by ignoring fast repeat clicks, which makes legitimate double-clicks feel broken instead.

Then the PC has earned a look — USB controller, drivers, or something deeper misbehaving system-wide. That's a $75 bench diagnostic (credited toward the repair) at our Somerville PC repair shop, and it beats buying a fourth mouse.
Bring in the expensive mouse you'd like saved, or — more importantly — bring in the computer if mice keep misbehaving on it no matter what's plugged in. Phantom clicks, frozen pointers, and USB devices that come and go are cheap to diagnose and miserable to live with.
