Professional Virus Removal in NJ: What Happens When You Bring Your Computer In
If you've never taken a computer to a repair shop, the unknown is half the stress. Here's the whole thing, start to finish, exactly as it happens at my counter in Somerville: what to bring, what I ask, what I do, when you hear from me, and what you walk out with.
The Visit, Step by Step
One technician, one bench, and you're in the loop at every step.
You walk in and describe what's happening
No appointment. You tell me what you've seen: pop-ups, redirects, a warning with a phone number, a scan that keeps finding the same thing, a call you now regret answering. Photos of the screen help. So does knowing roughly when it started and what was installed or clicked around then.
I take the machine in for a $75 diagnostic
You get a ticket, I get the computer and the charger. The $75 is credited toward the repair if you go ahead. If you need the computer back the same day, say so now; rush slots are limited but often available.
The assessment happens at the bench
I scan the drive from outside Windows so nothing on it can hide, then go through startup entries, scheduled tasks, services, installed programs and every browser profile by hand. I also check the drive's health and the memory, because a failing drive and an infection look alike from the keyboard.
I call you with findings and a price
Plain English: what I found, how it got in if I can tell, what I recommend, and what it costs. Standard malware removal is a flat $149 with the diagnostic already inside it. If a Windows reinstall or file recovery is also warranted, each is a separate line. Nothing happens until you approve.
You approve, and the work gets done
Cleanup includes removing the infection and its persistence pieces, spyware and adware cleanup, browser hijacker removal with search engines and homepages reset, verifying Windows and the security software are patched and running, and a verified-clean check. Most machines are done in 24 to 48 hours.
Pickup, with a walkthrough
I call when it's ready. At pickup I show you what was found, tell you which accounts may need new passwords and in what order, and answer questions. The work carries a 30-day labor warranty. If you want ongoing protection, the plan is $9.99 a month and I can set it up before you leave.
What to Bring
A short list. Missing something? Come anyway.
| Bring | Why |
|---|---|
| The computer (laptop or desktop tower) | For a desktop, the tower alone is enough; leave the monitor, keyboard and mouse at home unless they're part of the problem. |
| The charger or power cord | I test on the machine's own power supply. Forgetting it is the most common reason for a second trip. |
| Your Windows or Mac login password | I can't assess an account I can't sign into. Write it on the ticket or tell me at the counter. |
| A note of the symptoms and when they started | Phone photos of any warnings are ideal. The exact wording tells me where an alert came from. |
| Anything the scammer had you install or the number they called from | If this started with a phone call or remote session, those details point me straight at what to look for. |
| An external backup drive, if you have one | Only if files were affected. It changes the recovery options. |
Appointments, Hours, Updates and the Address
Removing the practical reasons not to come.
Appointment policy: none needed. Walk in Monday through Friday 10am to 5pm or Saturday 9am to 2pm. If you'd like to call first, (908) 428-9558 reaches the shop, and if I'm at the bench an answering service takes the message and I call back.
Updates: I call you after the diagnostic with findings and a price, and again when the machine is ready. If something changes in between, such as a drive that turns out to be failing, you hear about it before I act on it. You can also call anytime for status.
Service type: drop-off only for residential customers. There's no on-site or in-home virus removal, and I don't use remote access for this work: an infected machine needs to be on the bench, offline, to be cleaned properly.
Address: Dave's Computers, 75 N Bridge St, Somerville, NJ 08876, behind Bank of America, one block off Main Street. Directions from nearby towns are below. If you'd rather read more before coming in, the virus removal page has the full service description and inside a real PC diagnostic shows what the assessment looks like on a real machine.

Bringing Your Computer In: Common Questions
Do I need an appointment for virus removal at Dave's Computers?
No. Walk in Mon-Fri 10-5 or Sat 9-2 at 75 N Bridge St, Somerville, NJ 08876. If you need same-day turnaround, call (908) 428-9558 before you drive over so I can tell you what's possible.
How long will my computer be at the shop?
Most virus removal jobs are done in 24 to 48 hours from drop-off. A Windows reinstall or file recovery adds time, and you'll know that before approving it. Rush service may be available if you ask at drop-off.
Do I have to pay before you start?
You pay the $75 diagnostic at drop-off. It's credited toward the repair, so a standard $149 cleanup means $74 more at pickup. Nothing beyond the diagnostic is charged until you've approved the work and it's done.
Can you do virus removal remotely or at my house?
No. Residential service is drop-off only, and an infected computer needs to be on the bench and offline to be cleaned and verified properly. Business clients can ask about on-site options for other kinds of work.
Will you see my personal files?
I see what's necessary to clean and verify the machine, and nothing leaves the shop. Your drive isn't shipped anywhere and only one person works on your computer. If you'd like to remove something private before drop-off and the computer is stable enough to do it, that's fine.
What if it turns out not to be a virus?
You'll hear what it actually is, with a price if it's fixable, and you decide. If you choose not to repair, you've paid the $75 diagnostic and you leave knowing what's wrong, which is often the most useful thing a shop can tell you.
