Windows 10 End of Support: What Montgomery NJ Computer Owners Should Do Now

If you have a Windows 10 machine in Montgomery, Skillman, or Belle Mead, the deadline you may have heard about just moved, in your favor. Microsoft has extended free security updates for enrolled Windows 10 PCs all the way to October 12, 2027, a full year beyond the original cutoff.

That is genuinely good news, but only for machines that are actually enrolled. Here is the two-minute version of what changed and the three sensible paths for the township's home offices, students, and family PCs.

What actually changed

Windows 10 officially reached end of support in October 2025, but Microsoft's Extended Security Updates program kept patches flowing for consumers who enrolled, and in mid-2026 Microsoft stretched that program's end date to October 12, 2027. Enrollment is free if you sync your settings with Windows Backup or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or a one-time fee of about $30 otherwise, and one enrollment covers up to ten devices on the same Microsoft account. The catch: your PC needs to be on version 22H2 and signed into a Microsoft account, and machines that never enroll get nothing, they have been running without security patches since 2025. If you already enrolled last year, you are covered through 2027 automatically. The complete walkthrough, including how to check your version and enroll step by step, is in our full Windows 10 end of support guide.

The three paths, honestly ranked

  1. Enroll and breathe. If the machine runs well and does what you need, enrolling in ESU buys you until late 2027 with full security patches, no purchase required. For most Montgomery households this is the right first move regardless of what comes next, because it takes the panic out of the decision.
  2. Upgrade to Windows 11, if the hardware qualifies. Plenty of Windows 10 PCs meet Windows 11's requirements and simply never made the jump. A proper upgrade, done after a full backup, with drivers sorted and the leftovers cleaned up, turns the deadline into a non-event. If the machine feels too tired to bother, check whether it is the computer or just its drive first; our slow computer guide for Montgomery explains why an SSD often changes the answer.
  3. Replace on your schedule, not Microsoft's. For machines that cannot run Windows 11 and are showing their age, the extension means you can shop deliberately, catch a sale, and retire the old PC properly. When that day comes, our new computer setup and data transfer for Montgomery makes the handoff painless, and the old drive gets destroyed, not donated.

The one machine that can't wait

A Windows 10 PC that never enrolled in ESU has had no security patches since October 2025, and every month online makes it a softer target. If that machine is doing your banking, email, or taxes, do not put this off: enroll it this week or bring it in and we will sort it out on the spot. Ten unpatched minutes is fine; ten unpatched months is not.

Not sure which path your PC is on?

That is a ten-minute answer on the bench: whether your machine is 22H2 and enrollable, whether it qualifies for Windows 11, and whether upgrading or replacing is the better spend, with the honest math shown, not guessed. Upgrades, enrollment, tune-ups, and clean Windows 11 installs are all part of our Windows 10 repair and support service, and if the machine has other complaints along for the ride, everything we do for the township starts at computer repair for Montgomery.
