Adobe Photoshop PC Build Idea for New Jersey: What's Inside a $7,500 Photo Editing Workstation
I pulled up a Photoshop workstation from one of the national online builders to see what a no-compromise photo editing PC looks like in 2026. As configured, it listed at $7,506.12. Below is what's in it, section by section, in plain language. If that number is overkill for your budget, the fix is simple: visit the shop in Somerville and sit down with Dave to spec a build around the work you do and the money you want to spend.

Overview: What This Build Is For
A Photoshop machine with room for everything else a working creative runs.
Photoshop leans hard on one thing most people don't expect: how fast a single processor core can run. Most brushes, filters and adjustments run on one or two cores, so a chip with a high top speed feels quicker in Photoshop than one that just has a lot of cores. The reference build is tuned around that, then given extra headroom because few people run Photoshop alone. Lightroom catalogs, a video project, a 3D render or an AI tool is usually open next to it.
That's the idea behind this configuration. It's a mid-tower workstation with a top-of-the-line desktop processor, a lot of fast memory, a big graphics card and more than one solid state drive. It's a good picture of where the ceiling is. It is not where most New Jersey photographers, designers and print shops need to land.

An online configurator hands you forty dropdowns and asks you to pick. I'd rather ask you six questions across the counter. How big are your files? How many layers? One monitor or two, and at what resolution? What runs alongside Photoshop? What's the budget? What do you own already that's worth keeping? The answers decide the build, and they take about an hour to get right.

The configurator tells the overkill story by itself. Dropping from 64GB to 32GB of memory took about $600 off the price. Stepping the graphics card down to an RTX 5070 Ti took off about $255, and going up to an RTX 5090 added more than $4,700.
Storage
Two drives, on purpose.
The reference build has two 1TB NVMe solid state drives, each rated around 7,000 MB/s. One holds Windows and your applications. The second is there so Photoshop has its own place to work. When a document outgrows your memory, Photoshop writes the overflow to what it calls a scratch disk, and Adobe recommends a fast internal SSD for the app with a separate internal drive for scratch. Two drives means the two jobs aren't fighting over one.
The build has room for a third and fourth drive, which were left empty. That's where a large photo library or a local backup drive would go. (I also add drives to existing PCs.) How much storage you need depends on whether you shoot 20 megapixel JPEGs or 100 megapixel raw files, and whether your archive lives on the PC, on a NAS, or in the cloud. I ask about that at the consultation, along with your backup plan, because a photographer's drive failure is a business problem, and data recovery costs far more than a backup.

This is the section where cheap prebuilts cut corners. A quality power supply and proper cooling don't show up in a benchmark, but they're why one PC runs for eight years and another starts crashing in year two.

What specs does Adobe Photoshop actually need?
Adobe's own requirements page lists 8 GB of RAM as the minimum and 16 GB or more as recommended, a DirectX 12 graphics card with 4 GB of memory for 4K displays, a fast internal SSD for the app, and a separate internal drive for scratch disks. Real-world needs depend on your file sizes, layer counts and what else you run alongside Photoshop.
Is a $7,500 Photoshop workstation overkill?
For a lot of people, yes. That configuration is built for mixed workloads: Photoshop plus video editing, 3D or AI tools. If your work is mostly photo editing and retouching, a build specced around your actual files can cost far less.
My budget is under $2,500. Can I still get a better Photoshop machine?
